And there's a new campaign due to start soon. Basically an improved version of what we've done before, taking account of lessons learned etc.

Yes. That was exactly the notion. Looks like you chaps plugged in maps to approximate the Shenandoah. Very nice.

Yes. We were limited to the maps available in SoW of course, plus Garniers excellent random maps, but the trick is to use an SoW map that roughly approximates to the generaal terrain at that place. Even with the relatively few maps in the SoW library you can fit in cities, major rivers, fordable rivers, rolling farmland, mountain gaps, hilly forests and so on.

If NSD were ever to design a campaign system to run beside their battle game, they'd need to make a decision to go with either generic maps that are pulled from a library and fit the kind of terrain the battle is fought on (i.e. what we did), or they would need to build software that would create the map on the fly when the battle is generated by two opposing forces meeting (this is what Total War's engine does, only not very well).
