I'm still searching the net for good sound bites.
Most of the musketry, including the current ingame musketry, sounds more like a malfunctioning bag of microwave popcorn going off in another room.
Or like a fairy prancing on a sheet of packing bubbles.
All the videos of re-enactments sound like that, because the person making the recording is a fair ways away from the action, and doesn't understand or know how to make a good sound recording.
I can't believe that's how it would sound in real life, especially close up with a whole regiment firing at will, let alone in volley.
I think the only solution is for the game developers to go to a re-enactment with a good sound technician, get several hundred guys outside of the re-enanctment times and make several special purpose recordings from different angles and distances of a regiment blazing away.
But there are some good cannon recording, so here's a couple more:

This one is the best one yet, except for the sound effects near the end.
BOOM, BOOM, out go the lights.

Thanks rudy, I agree Musket sounds are practically impossible to find (at least online). As you say most of the recordings are done on phones/cameras at too far a distance and subject to a load of background noise.
The result is a sample that really could be anything.
That said I have read somewhere that Civil war vets described mass musketry fire as sounding like heavy rain on a tin roof. I think the samples I have are an improvement on the default, and they stand up well wether its a single regt firing or an entire division.
Those other two vids are great. The frustrating thing is once again the background chatter (litterally people gasping etc) its nice to have the echo after the shot but with all the whoops it means having to truncate them which detracts. Ill keep working on them and looking.
**Here is an example, great effect even including the FIRE! command, but the kid recording it on his phone can be heard at the end OMG'ing, which ive had to edit out. This means a shortened report)
The attachment Ca_NSD12Nap.zip is no longer available

All,
Somewhere on this forum I've posted some reenactor comments regarding musket fire and volume of sound. These were blanks being fired but the sheer noise was incredible. Roughly 500 muskets, (2 Brigades firing at each other at point blank range), being fired as fast as possible - You literally cannot hear someone shouting commands 5 yards away. "Rain on a tin roof" is apt, I think. A REALLY HARD rain.
The term "Rattle of Musketry" is a misnomer, I think. That person was NOT standing on the firing line.
Keep the faith.

As an aside is there a way to influence which sounds are played by the game when.
For example, it seems that the three cannon sounds are assigned to particular types of gun, is there a script to change this?
Or alternatively when a unit is marching (in column) and plays its marching music (one of 8 samples) it seems as though the game picks a random one and then assigns it to that type of unit for the rest of the game.
Is this correct? Or is there a way to influence what is played and when?

S,
You can adjust the cannons sounds by changing the names of the cannon sounds in the Sounds folder. I did it by picking the one you like the best and renaming the same one with the others names. That way you can get a consistant sound, if you want.
As far as music goes, it is indeed random. I do not believe there is a way to do that. someone else brought this up awhile back I think.

Thanks Jack, thought the marches were random.
As for the cannon sounds what i really want to know is which ingame artillery units use a particular sound.
So for example which units use the Napoleon sound, which use the Parrot sound and which use the James sound?

I love the new musket sounds, they are excellent! Big improvement for immersion.
Also the flag sound and all the rest are great. Really appreciate it.
I'm not using the cannon sounds yet, don't like the "whoosh" part. But I imagine these are still changing.
Good work!
edit: Just heard Capt. Spear "Forward, march" -- brilliant -- blends in well!

Yes the cannon sounds are changing (I play a battle, notice something I dont like and change them again or find or rudy posts another link)
Stay tuned for more to come.

I still can't find any good vids of musketry by large groups of soldiers, but these vids are from a civil war mod of Mount & Blade Warband.
I've posted them, not really for the sound files, but for the pattern of fire and volume of fire from a line of infantry.
The first video has about 50 soldiers, and the next video has about 150, but as you can see I have to practise my COMMAND VOICE because several of the soldiers ignore me.
Bastards.
They're probably Irish.

The 3rd video is from the napoleonic mod of Mount & Blade Warband, with about 150 prussian soldiers firing smoothbore muskets.
The prussian soldiers are more disciplined and obedient than irishmen from New York.

I don't know if it would be acceptable, either from copyright or respect to the modders, to change the sound files for the rifle shots, and then record 50 - 150 soldiers firing rifled muskets.
This is my first effort at making videos, but I can already see that Ridley Scott & sons better watch out.
