The more I read this the more I think this is a courier play issue, not with normal play. Still, I'll check out MTG's test and see what comes up. Thanks for all the feedback here...

Please try the test if you have CV. Also, please indicate who and where this happened, I'll try to find it and test it. Thanks
Forgive me Reb, but I don't know what CV is in reference to.
This happens in any Sandbox game I play when the order to "use roads" is given, and on any of the maps/OOBs.
I should mention that I'm still playing the game from a long ago install with the stock maps and OOBs. Frankly, I couldn't tell you what the last installed patch was. 2 1/2 - 3 years ago at least. I haven't even registered at Matrix yet. (Don't know if that makes a difference but it seemed worth mentioning.)
Whoa, almost missed this post. Dude, upgrade, you're missing out on a lot of new features, and fixes.
For sure the useroads issue is with some older versions.
An FYI - The reason this is a tricky issue is the fix messes up sandbox in a way. That is, if it works correctly, units going to the road first, then the CO is not leading the division in most cases. And, when this happens troops will blindly march headlong into the enemy. So, Norb has been doing a balancing act by trying to fix both issues, at least I think this is what's happening here.

Of course it would be best if the regiments knew not to blunder into the enemy, but in lieu of that, just make the commanders move faster so they will eventually move up to the head of the column.

Easily modible in the unitglobal.csv. You can adjust the walk and run speed of any unit. Definitely worth a try to see if it helps.
I have a Speed Mod I use when creating scenarios so I can place troops faster. I set the run speed to 1,000 and they move with lightening speed..

Yes it works, we do that in the napoleon mod. But it doesn't fix the problem.
