I have Paint Shop Pro and know it inside out - been using it for years. Would that do the job?
Any Graphics Editor that can modify and save these files should work...TGA, BMP, JPG, DDS, since these will cover just about all of the editing that one would encounter with the maps.

If, I were just starting and wanted to learn how the maps worked, I would just edit one of the hundreds of maps that Garnier have created.

Just adding fences and houses to any one of those maps will change the appearance of them. This would allow for someone to start altering maps without having to learn the entire process all at once.

The whole process is simple if you understand it, but LP probably said it better than anyone with the reference to an instrument.

Paint Shop Pro can't read/edit DDS files. I'd need another program for that, but I'm sure there's one out there. Thanks.

Do a Google Search for a Paint Shop Pro dds-plugin.

I had to do the same thing with Photoshop it required a dds-plugin.

Can these 5 mile maps be converted into say 7.5 or 10 mile maps? Devils is probably in the detailed graphics so to speak? I am very grateful for all this work, but would like to have about 2-3 miles on Fredericksburg and Lynchburg? I would like to have the towns more centered in the map. Remember I said I am grateful...

The answer to your question is they would have to be redone; there is no way to add any more terrain to an existing map without changing the maps coordinates.

So, any houses, fences, etc… would probably be partially or fully covered once the new coordinates are put into place.

Basically, to put that another way there is no way possible to cut out the center of a map and add terrain to the outer parts of it.

Thanks Davinci,

From what I see, the designers do try to be historic in what the intended release is suppose to be. It's really too bad that the consumer didn't get a "Fredericksburg' when the designers were that close. I don't know the history of Lynchburg so I don't know what was going on NE of the map. Putting towns in the center of "some" maps would allow for more imagination when playing "Sandbox". For example, I have named one of my Sandox Battles "South Defends Fredericksburg", the Salem map allows me to do this. I'll name a Lynchburg Sandbox "South Defends Lynchburg. These are of course defenses positions for the south. I also have "South to Take Fredericksburg" etc, where I take the offenses position....It's all good, but too bad the Salem Map was not a 10 mile map.

Am defiantly interested in map creation. Winter will be upon us soon in central US, hence will have a bit of free time. Have modded other game engines in the past. Seems most games have different editing software for modding. Am curious how difficult map creation is for SOW.
