Here's how we are doing it. We get it working, then work on something else which breaks it, then get it working again. We still have some AMD issues, but we're getting them narrowed down.

1. I do plan on having a single chat lobby, so hopefully we'll be ok there.
2. I think the first version will require only the base files, for exactly the reasons you mention. We'll allow mods in a later release. The server will pick the options.
3. In game chat will go to everyone, if you want to talk privately you have to use a courier :) Actually this will probably be an option, but that's what we're shooting for.
4. We won't have a ton of maps at first, but we'll keep releasing them.

The way Gettysburg MP is going to be implemented, I do not expect a lack of maps to be a big problem. The old Sid Meier's game, used only one map (a very large map, but still only one) and I never got bored with that game.

The problem with the Empires only 4v4 map is it's very small, and since people can pick their units (No OOB in the game) you find yourself playing against the exact same factions, the exact same overpowered units and players using the exact same tactics. Plus, to your credit, I played a lot of TC2M battles repeatedly and never found them to play out the same way twice. I believe your new Gettysburg battle-engine is much more complex than Empires, which will keep the game fresh no matter how few maps are initially available.

Elmo ! You've found where i place my hopes for a great game ! Empire manage to hold my attention 2 days. Norb will be in trouble if the uglies begin to appear around here.B)

The courrier option is a nice one, if you can manage it. As for the map, i'm not worried. TC2M map size was good in my book, never got bored.

Norb i was wondering(might have miss it) if you are thinking about implementing weather, like fog or light rain.

I do not believe that will make it in the first release. Luckly, GB had beautiful weather all days :) There are weath effects to fighting, but no graphics. Just a visual indicator on the toolbar.
