So you've turned down all the options to their minimum and it's still unplayable?
Simply lowering the graphical settings doesn't have that much of an effect. It will save me some FPS, but not nearly enough to be what I consider acceptable.
The only way I can get decent FPS, is by pressing "Ctrl-T" until all the vegetation disappears. But this isn't really an acceptable solution, in my opinion. I just tried playing one of the tutorials, (The one where you start out with two regiments and are initially told to repel a small Confederate attack from atop a small, forested hill.), and it ran in 10 FPS unless I started doing the
Ctrl-T-routine. Not acceptable by any standard of comparison.
Unless you have a very poor computer "unplayable" is not the exact word.
I would not regard 10 FPS with four regiments on-screen as "playable" by any stretch of the imagination.

Something's amiss with your setup. I get a solid 25 FPS with my 32 bit XP system, dual core 1.8, 2GB RAM, with 2 VCards SLI, running this mentioned scenario. I always run with Medium draw distance, 75 per cent trees, and no off map draws. Works for my setup. Still, Corps and some Division size setups will bog down FPS to 10 FPS, but I consider this playable, just stutters from time to time when the action gets hot.
We strive to optimize all released scenarios, so Army size battles are possible on all machines (minimum specs), just gotta tweak your options. Sandbox on the other hand is AI on FULL, and this will overwhelm the lesser machines on Army sized levels.
I left this thread alone until you posted the 10 FPS on that brigade tutorial...with your rig, that shouldn't be happening!

Something's amiss with your setup.
It runs all AAA games fine with maximum graphical settings. It's bizarre how I can run Shogun 2 and Battlefield 3 with absolutely everything maxed-out in 50/60 FPS, but not the Brigade Tutorial in SoW.
Have you tried using Game Booster3 ? Free program ...
Using any kind of performance-enhancer is utterly pointless, because like I said, the problem isn't with my computer - it's more than strong enough. The problem lies with the game and how it's optimized for my machine.

If it were me, I'd try Game Booster. Logically, it won't work, but logically your machine should be getting much better frame rates in SoW. Surely it's worth a bash?

Why would it be pointless? If you don't even try it, how are you going to know for sure? What would you be out, but just a little time down loading it and trying it to make sure? If Game Booster 3 doesn't work for you, then delete it from your system, no biggy.

Tried it. Didn't work.

While a bit aged now my pc can still handle top flight games like skyrim and total war series well with good graphic settings. I have noticed though that with evything maxed out on SoW the fps can drop considerably. The setting to get some fps back for me was the Tree density and terrain detail. I have these set to 75% max trees and Medium terrain detail. On these settings the game still looks good and it does give about 5-10 fps back so its a good balance. Also deselect Draw off map Trees.
Heres what ive found on v1.4:
Altering the uniform detail seems to make no difference as im not sure how this works in the 1.4 'packed sprite' version.
Altering the map Object detail made little difference.
Altering the draw distances has a marginal effect on fps but not much unless you reduce them significantly but then it doesnt look so good.
Deselecting Draw off map Terrain doesnt seem to do that much and gives it a really odd look when you get close to the map edge.
Reducing Max Trees percentage has a big impact.
Reducing Terrain detail has a good impact.
I have also noticed that pressing T until all trees/wheat/shrubs are removed increases fps phenomally. It would be nice if the engine only drew trees in view rather than have them on all the time, wishing thinking i know.
Here are some pics with setting description below taken from the Brigade tutorial. FPS is in the top left corner.
Trees 100%; Terrain Best

There is a max tree draw distance option. I think that's what you are looking for.

Oh, wow.
I've just tried playing the game on my little brother's laptop, and it was like an entirely different game. I cranked every single setting up to its absolute highest possible value, and it ran great. It's amazing how incredibly much a decent framerate adds to the game experience. I noticed some slowdown on some of the larger scenarios, but it did in no way compare to how it runs on my computer.
Note that while that machine is fairly powerful for a laptop, (it runs "Modern Warfare 3" on max, for example), it is in no way amazing, and doesn't even come close to my computer. Yet, it runs the game so much better you'd think they were two completely different games.
Dev(s), I don't know what the hell you've done to this game, but it needs to be fixed. Bad.
