This program also needs to have an ability to deploy at a location, like putting a commander at one spot and clicking deploy into line, and have his regiments snap into position.

One last thing from me:

I do not plan on using this editor for one major reason. All my historical scenarios are very carefully scripted...troops don't march in the vicinity of where they marched during Gettysburg, they march where hours of research says they marched. In this case, there is a lot of scripting locations for each regiments, halts, counter-marches, etc.

The best way to do this is to go into the game and store the locations over and over again as I'm manually marching the units.

If the editor actually can do that for me and save time, I will use it. But for now, it sounds like it still needs a lot of work.

Good luck!

This looks awesome... hope the battlescript gets put in. This is very nice, know it takes a lot of work. Thanks!

Have you posted any of those?

Well, I don't script a bunch of marching around for the sake of history...boring, but being able to place a series of movement points and formation changes would be excellent. Still, just a simple, stable scenario builder with beginning positions would be an outstanding app addition. IOW, don't try to do to much too soon, first, simple and stable, then add features.

Indeed. I've been watching this from the start and I think it has great potential. Kalliser obviously has the talent, but it's all about stability first, then add the bells and whistles. :)

You are right about popular conception not being where reality took units, but it is going to be very hard replicate that using this map set although better than any previous. What would be really way cool is maps that are correct down to 1m that you could enter in MGSR grid locations/lat long. I drove around Gburg in July with several others comparing actually ground to SoW screen captures(because we do that sort thing that is why). The 20ft interval loses a lot of detail. 1st day fight up by Robinson's position is amazing. Crossing that field from the West there is a dip where you just vanish and that makes a lot of sense when you compare it to personal accounts. Whole regiments and lines can appear and vanish on a few foot steps. Take the Union charge at Big Black Bridge. You could not replicate it using this contour interval as the swale was less than 20 ft deep, but enough to hide two regiments. It would be one flat field here. However, whatever you did to LOS in the last patch is a BIG improvement. I love bumping into things. Ran into the Texas Brigade at musket range last night.
A question more for discussion that any relevance to the editor attempt. How do you define a "historical scenario." Unless you restrict movement times and routes and actions for both sides is it historical? I never fight "historical" scenarios on line due to the fact a player bent on winning will typically and immediately go ahistorical to win. Is the best someone can ever do a simulation replicating historical conditions and just watch it?

When you build a scenario, you can have random branching points. For example at 10:10 AM you can have a random event in the scenario. A simplified version looks like this:

10:10 AM ranevt whichway:3

evtran whichway:1 go left
evtran whichway:2 go right
evtran whichway:3 go straight

The game engine allows for random events to be nested so that in the events that follow go left, there can be additional random event branch points.

In a historical scenario, one of the paths through the random events will closely follow the known historical maneuvers. So in the simple example above, one of three times, the scenario will play out using the historical events.

:)

It appears that this latest fixed .exe (version 1.5) is working. This is a very nice editor, I like it.

So far it's has been worth some of the headaches over the last couple days. I will let you know if I come across any problems.

Thanks! :)

Check your PM (I responded). I did have a copy on DVD (I save everything). The version I have is version 1.6 (last version before Megaupload was taken offline) which you can download (I gave you a download link).

Remember though this was a work in progress, so expect crashes along the way. If it does work, just make sure that the scenario's are 1.5 compatible.

Have fun!
