G,
If you're looking for numbers, may I suggest "Armies of 1809" by Scotty Bowden and Charles Tarbox. It is a small but exhaustingly researched book with superb OOBs and great maps. The Austrian numbers are taken directly from the Kreigsarkive in Vienna. They also allow for actual numbers in the field as opposed to numbers on paper. (I can vouch for this - I did the research there. Vienna is a great city. Too bad it's in Europe.)

G,
I mis-quoted myself. It's "Armies on the Danube 1809." Doh! :pinch:

However these hussars still are not clear to me.
It looks that you add Austrian Kaiser Franz Hussars Regiment and French 1st or 10th Hussars.
But I don’t remember, were they at Tuegen-Hausen or Eckhmul ?
Consider the mod a snapshot of history. Everything doesnt have to be exact aslong as it is represented correctly. Each different uniform takes up about 40mb of disk space so you can see that things will add up fairly quickly, the units folder is alrady over 1gig, not to mention using up game memory which there is only so much available, and finally my own time which I put in as much as i can to deliver a fun mod. So im sure most people can deal with the fact that some units have the wrong uniform so long as they are shown correctly.
In SOWG I saw that few Southern regiments include few little bit different uniforms.
Maybe in your mod you could mix French grenadiers in French line battalions. They could be placed on right flank as 1 grenadier company together with 4 fusiliers companies in the centre and on left flank 1 voltigeur company.
I played around with this but ended up not doing it. The reason was that I had to split the battalions in two due to their size so having a grenadier and voltigeur in each didnt look right. Also I had to edit the drill so every space was assinged a sprite so any unit below a certain size would never show their flank company. I also wanted the player to be able to use voltigeurs as a screen like what would of happened hence why they are 'detached' in the oobs.
Hi Jack, I read a book once which I cant recall the title, it had a black cover with some black and white picture on, that had the detailed oobs for the various battles Eckmuhl, Wagram, Raab, Aspern-Essling. the Wagram had numbers but the Eckmuhl didnt have them for Austria. The Eckmuhl battle is very complex and its hard to see exaclty where everyone was engaged. The oob I have created is a balanced(ish) one to make sandbox more enjoyable and is based off the fighting on
Day 2 which had the Austrian retreat so i have left elements off that i cant see where they were engaged. If anyone has a good oob of units actually engaged for day 1 and where that would be cool. I have rendered for example Wurttenberg light infantry and i know they stormed through Eckmuhl on day 1 i think, but cant find if they did anything on day 2.

I have a question for you, G. What maps are you going to use. Are the GB ones adequate? I know next to nothing about the Napoleonic wars let alone what kind of terrain they were fought on.

Knowing something about the Napoleonic wars is a must. I am far from any kind of expert, but Napoleon was a very powerful transitional figure. He changed Europe completely around; and not just militarily, which is what he is best known for.
If you did look at his militarily accomplishments, you would be impressed.

Hey, i guess the answer to that is all types. From the Penninsula (dry spanish landscape, rocky hills, think little round top, sunshine, creeks, ancient Morish forts), he fought in egypt at the battle of the pyramids, then theres russia with its vast plains and rolling hills, dust roads, freezing weather. There were campigns in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, germany, Italy, Poland, Austria, Russia to name a few. This campaign is Austria which is farmland, forests and a mixture of rolling countyside and hills so it could be similar to the GB maps except there were no fences. The alpine map is a good start. You can also look up War of 1812 US vs Britain, and Battle of New Orelans for a taster of Napoleonic warfare on home soil. Hmm I have some US sprites somewhere.

Generally speaking Europe is far flatter and far-more open. Many battles of the Napoleonic era did not have the series of heights and heavy forestry. Think of Waterloo- What made Wellington's line so geographically sound? Because he had the one dominating ridge over the entire landscape. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but alas, think open and flat.

All,
Right now the big Gettysburg map will probably be the one most used for a Napoleonic battle as it most resembles central Europe AND doesn't have fences

Perhaps the Kansas map, (the original), could suffice for Spain?
G,
You're certainly right. "A snapshot of History " is exactly the right call. Whatever you come up with as a final result will be more than we deserve. I'm sure I can speak for us all when I say thank you for all the hard work.

AHHHH! AHHHH! AHHHHH! OMG!
In order to slack my thirst for some Napolonic combat while waiting for Gunship to finish up, I loaded in my copy of "Cossacks/Napolanic Wars." I had really forgotten what a truly awful game it was!!! Ugh! Uninstalled it right away and tossed it out. Ew!

Get a copy of HistWar. The latest patch really makes for believable napoleonic battles. It's a very different experience than SOW, but well worth the investment.
Gunship24, your sprites are fantastic! I'm interested in seeing if the SOW engine can handle combined arms attacks.
