Excellent stuff.....downloaded, installed and up and running.
All looks good so far. I like the fact that keyboard commands can be customised* and I like the fact the map can be viewed while paused - all minor I know but it's the little details that add to the overall impression.
*Edit: I know they could to some degree in TC2M as well.

Suppose I'll end my year or so of lurking now. I'm a wargamer from Finland and I've been interested in ACW as a wargaming period for a good while. Although it's not that popular as a period here in Europe where the napoleonic era and world war 2 eastfront reign supreme, I feel that the setting and the drama of ACW make excellent wargaming.
Anyway, here's my first impressions on the single player demo mission (with countless hours of TC2M gameplay as a reference point).
The first thing I noticed was the new control and formation options. Bless you for the option to "strafe" a formation left and right! It makes setting up a defensive position much easier. Didn't try the oblique maneuver yet as I was too busy scrambling my regiments to defend against two confederate brigades flanking both sides of my formation at once. If this was dynamic AI and not scripted, the AI deserved applause.
Unit pathing on the field had improved with the AI putting waypoints between them and the target position to avoid clipping friendly units (at least it seemed to act in that way). Smart. I'm hoping this translates well to divisional/corps level so that a minimum of "taking command" in bigger battles is needed. We've all had the "no no no! What the * are you doing!!" -moments in TC2M I think

. If those moments are reduced to a minimum in this game, then you have a most excellent game on your hands, people.
The multiplayer lobby was empty when I visited it. I suppose all the americans are asleep. I'll be interested in seeing if I can manage a decent cross-atlantic ping in multiplayer.
ah, and a small note to the suggestion box. I'm not sure if there's a workaround in the controls yet, but the classic ctrl+t option to snap off trees quickly to "see wha'ss happenin' to mah boys" in the woods now contains several steps of detail cutting. a snap control to remove just the trees would be nice. As the trees obscure the unit flags it is also difficult at times to find the hotspot to click on to gain control of the unit.

We may have ended up with too many sprite reduction controls, Maz.
The multi step sprite reduction was one of my ideas for getting a greater frame rate on the fly. For people with better machines this won't be necessery and indeed may not be necessary at all. I'm thinking this is one item that we'll revisit for the patch depending on peoples wishes.
I think you just voted.

It's possible that you got a botched download. Try to re-download the demo and install again.
