That's a relatively low priority in my opinion though.
I think this is a wonderful idea. I can imagine struggling to push my men through a hard patch of terrain while under frantic attack, all the while blowing off a pesky courier. I take heavy casualties, just barely push through in order to come out on the enemy flank, and find the whole enemy arrayed before me!

I finally listen to the courier, and the message is a desperate call for retreat, as 30 minutes ago my superiors realized that I was pushing through the wrong terrain!

I think the situation above is just one of many awesomely realistic and fun moments that could arise out of a system like you have proposed.
