Those are the artillery batteries horses on the LHS out of line of battle. If you zoom in you can see artillery on the far right firing.

Always thoguh the trench picture was at Petersburg but I could be mistaken also I know where to find a neat picture

This picture from Antietam and is the only photo ever of an engagement during the civil war.
The Chancellorsville picture has been mistaken for a Petersburg shot but it was indeed taken in trenches before those troops stormed Marye's Heights at the Second Battle of Fredericksburg during the Chancellorsville campaign.

That Antietam photo is also often mistaken for a combat photo but it was actually taken after the battle.

Well it's still one of the coolest ACW photos ever taken.. :)

It's very candid, those are my favorite kind (which are pretty rare).

Very true statement. Posed shots aren't for me but then again the camera process way back when didn't capture movement well at all.

i came across some pictures of retired napoleonic soldiers in uniform once, thought they were cool and was very surprised to see them.
