Help with Packing Sprites

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

I wrote a couple of scripts for Gimp which somewhat automates the process of converting the TC2M sprites into the new packed version.
Excellent, anything would have to be better than doing all of the thousands of individual frames by hand. I can't even imagine how long that would take to complete.

Did the TC2M \ Sprites lose any of their fluid animation after the conversion to the png files?

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

Nope, they move like Gunship's packed Nappy sprites. I'm just taking his unpacked sheets and converting them into the packed format.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

However, when I convert them to DDS format the quality goes completely and the sprites become very pixellated and blocky.

Is this a problem with the way in which I originally rendered them or a problem with the conversion to DDS do you think?

I use Poser and I rendered the sprite animations in 128 x 128 pixel images as png files using high standard render settings.

To convert to DDS I used a freeware program. I tried a couple of others but the results were the same...

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated,

thanks,

Stu
Hi Stu - I actually render them at 512 x 512 png. Then I resize and conver them to tga's and dds. The tga's I use to adjust brightness etc and then copy the alpha channel from the dds. I can't figure how to convert png to tga with the channel! Then I convert the the tga back to dds. Seems to stop some of the blocky and messy dds this way but is a bit labour intensive.
