Seven Years War Mod?

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Thank you for the tip Crikey, at the moment I have these books from Osprey:
Zulu War 1879 - Twilight of a Warrior Nation
Khartum 1881 - General Gordon's last stand
British Forces in Zlululand 1979
Queen Victoria's Enemies (Southern Africa)
Queen Victoria's Enemies (Northern Africa)

I would like to make the new mod in another way, I do not want to do the mod alone, but I will seek the cooperation of other people to have a result in less time compared to the Blenheim mod. I think that you know that making all aspect of a mod is time consuming, I would like to concentrate only on the sprites, while another person makes the oobs, another the scenarios and so on. Last but not least I will constantly update about the state of the mod.
Quite happy to have a crack at some OOBs for you guys - message me which battles you want and I'll get something together for you ;) B)

I recommend Saul David's Book 'Zulu' which is probably the best book written on the Zulu wars also gives excellent information on the British and Zulu army compositions he has written several very good books on British military history just reading his book about the Indian Mutiny (or Rebellion)of 1857

I keep seeing activity in this thread hoping its SYW related - but it isn't, perhaps a Zulu/Colonial wars thread is needed?

Now having played The Fontenoy mod, I'm curious about the SYW mod. I used to play the old FTG mod from TC2M. Is there anything new?

Hi all

I haven't forgotten about the Seven Years War update. I have the sprites ready for the Battle of Leuthen and many others for other SYW OObs,but not yet complete. It will happen. I have been seriously ill from November last year and I am steadily recovering to the point were I am working at sprite production again. I iniitially had sprites in the old format but have been busy converting them to packed format. Once I have succeeded getting them to work in game then progress will speed up dramatically.

I also have the American War of Independence at a work in progress. I had it working on my computer before I got ill. Alas it was in the older format and when I get the packing of sprites solved correctly then I will convert them and present them as well.

As you can imagine their is a lot of work involved and any help would be appreciated. Especially work on the csv's such as artillery, drills pertinent to SYW and things like attributes of the troops. Anyone with a passion for the SYW might enjoy doing this type of research. I have some information already but better qualified persons than I might be able to contribute a better understanding of the period. That applies for the AWI as well.

Remus - I can offer some help with the csvs and troop ratings. I think troop ratings would be quite tricky as the quality of the armies varied a lot over the wars. The superb infantry Frederick had in 1756 and 1757 was gone by the 1760s and other nations were improving. It is similar to the way that in 1800 Napoleon's enemies were initially outclassed but learned to develop and by 1814 were more than equal to the French armies. This can be reflected in different OOBs. For sandbox play just designing different generic OOBs might be a way to go. You could have one for 1756-1757, another for 1758-1759 and maybe a third for 1760 onwards.

Hi Saddletank

Thank you for replying to my request. I would really appreciate any help you can give. At present I have sprites and an OOB ready for the Battle of Leuthen. If you could make OOBs for other battles and send them to me then I can tailor make sprites for them. I have been having some difficulty and using up alot of time trying to pack the sprites and getting them into the game. I have packed them and ready to go but having to do trial and error until I succeed in placing them in the game. Once I do then I can cover most of the Seven Years War in Europe and upload the American War of Independence, so your help would be very welcome indeed. I'll leave it to you to choose what OOBs you prefer first.

Hi Remus

Is your mod playable yet? Can the sprites work in-game? Can what you have so far be uploaded yet? I ask since I think a few people at the KS group would be prepared to help the build and to test. I have two suggestions to get the mod running quickly so it can be further worked on:

- use the csv files from the Fontenoy mod which is the closest mod we have in terms of time period, then tweak from there.

- alternatively use the KS Napoleon mod and work backwards in time, deleting squares, lobotomising the artillery's power and move speed and lowering the cavalry power.

One of my favourite features of any mod is the battalion guns in the Blenheim mod. I think those work really well; they give an 18thC mod a unique flavour over other mods. It would be neat to see a similar feature in the SYW mod. I think just about every nation used battalion guns in the late 1750s.

Rather than working on more OOBs for now I think getting the basic mechanics working (logistics folder files) is a better approach. Once the mod is stable and feels right for late 1750s combat then you can relax and turn to making sprites for different nationalities and designing some other OOBs.

I don't know which nations and battles interest you but I think it would be nice to have one major OOB for the west where the French and perhaps their Saxon allies face the British, Hessians, Hanoverians and Brunswick, one central battle pitting the Prussians against the Austrians (looks like this slot has been nicely filled already) and one eastern theatre battle with Prussians against Russians.

That would only leave some lesser nations like Sweden, Bavaria, the Imperial Kreis, etc.

Some of the small actions fought in Pomerania between the Swedes and a selection of rather odd second-line Prussian units and Freicorps regiments would make very unusual SoW battles. Rossbach of course would allow you to create some really fun Kreis units which although militarily rather useless are some of my favourite regiments of this period; very colourful uniforms and names.
