Mmmmmmmmm,
Pure Prairie League. Reminds me so much of my Dad.

I listened to so much stuff and so many genres sheesh. LOL! Sorry
JC but I have never been a fan of the Dead, at all.
The bands from my early childhood that totally make me think of Dad and that I still love and loved through all the different stages of my life:
The Eagles
Fleetwood Mac (one of the best ever, so original, so distinct, no one sounded or sounds like them, the epitome of classic. Lindsay Buckingham is one of the best and most overlooked guitarists IMHO)

Pure Prairie League
And how can I forget,
The Marshall Tucker Band, Fire on the Mountain, Can't you See, Heard it in a Love Song. Just great stuff.
Those had to be his big four and I still know like every lyric to every song. Just great classic stuff.
Myself though I went through two stages, first was early high school where I was a huge
Floyd and
Zeppelin fan. Loved tons of the classic rock stuff,
Doors,
Cream,
Tull,
Neil Young,
Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc.
Old Man - Neil Young no words can describe..

At the core though is
The Beatles, grew up listening to them, still listen to them, absolutely the best band EVER. They still sound as relevant and fresh today as they ever did. The White Album, Sgt. Pepper's and Revolver, really pretty much every album just wow.

The Police! Certainly one of the best and one of my all time favorites.

But what I truly loved and which is still the hook of my heart was the punk rock stuff I got into. I lived my high school years in Chicago and was very much involved in the punk scene of the later 80's. I play guitar and played for a few different bands back in the day. There are so many good bands and stuff I still can't help but love and listen too.
Sex Pistols
The Clash
The Ramones
Misfits
Samhain
Minor Threat
Fugazi
Bad Brains
Operation Ivy (best ska band ever, give it a try if you think you can handle it,
JC you might really be impressed by some of these bass lines, just wow. Such energy, such passion, I still listen to these guys and can't help but smile and bounce.)

Social Distortion
Sublime
Screeching Weasel (played with them a couple times and was gonna be the new rhythm guitarist but then the band broke up. Ben Weasel used to hang out with a bunch of us all the time)
and many more local bands in the day

At that time the whole grunge thing was happening too and I totally LOVED a bunch of bands that came out of that
Boss Hogg
The Melvins
Sound Garden
Monster Magnet
Nirvana! (who I saw, by the way, at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, one of the best shows I was ever at and I was at a TON)
Janes Addiction
The Cult
Tool - incredible band, just amazing
NIN - I don't care what anyone says, Trent Reznor is one of the most talented artists out there. I LOVE NIN. Seen them a few times too.
Weezer

Finally what evolved out of all that influence was a love for Indy rock and I truly have a huge soft spot for chick rock. Some of my favorite bands as I got older have been all female bands or female fronted:
PJ Harvey (brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, seen her quite a few times and she is amazing live)
Sleater-Kinney (absolutely loved these girls, one of the best live rock shows I've ever been too and I was at every show of theirs in chicago from about '96 til they broke up)
Fiona Apple
Veruca Salt
Elastica
I'm forgetting tons of course but that's a nice little start as I sit here thinking...
There is always so much out there it's hard to pin down. The 90's certainly produced a bunch of great guitar driven excellent music!
A new discovery of mine lately is
Charlotte Hatherley, she's an English artist, guitarist and singer who I've really gotten into. Pretty much unknown over this side of the pond though. She's quite the fine little lass too! Yummy. But now that would be a whole 'nother thread wouldn't it?
