Re: Question - how many men per mile?
Hancock, you Magnificent Bastard, you beat me to it. I was reading all this math nonsense and thinking to myself - why don't they just look in Hardees' Tactics? All the information is right there. Good job!

2.3 feet per file in game.

Re: Question - how many men per mile?
Well, unless I'm adding this up wrong (highly possible) that comes to the same figure as stated by born2see, and MTG which is 11733 .2.3 feet per file in game.
-Jim
But, I think that that would only be for a single file line, a double line would be that figure times two!
Is that correct?

No. I said I was done but time heals all wounds. Our numbers, confirmed by MTG's superior education, are for a double line.Wait a minute! MTG, you didn't take into account my doubling the number of men for two ranks. Our numbers are the same!

Yes. 5280 /4.5 = 1173 (rounded down) per mile. Times 2 = 2347 * 5 = 11,733 in 5 miles.
Using born2see's numbers: each man width:36" + space between men 18" = 54" /12inches/ft = 4.5 feet.
1 mile = 5280 ft. * 5 = 26400ft in 5 miles.
# of men in 5 miles = 26400/4.5 = 5867 men

Re: Question - how many men per mile?
Understandable, but I was going to just let this post fall into the abyss of darkness within the Internet, until Jim posted.1 mile = 5280 ft. * 5 = 26400ft in 5 miles.
# of men in 5 miles = 26400/4.5 = 5867 men.
No. I said I was done but time heals all wounds. Our numbers, confirmed by MTG's superior education, are for a double line.
Somehow the same number is coming up between all of you, but you are using a different scale pertaining to the distance between the men.
But, let’s forget about that for a minute, if each man is equal to three men, and the game is scaled to represent that figure, even with a total count of 5867x3 comes to 17601.
That was really the whole point of this post, fitting the right amount of men within the five miles of terrain.
But, now I have completely confused myself, so I’m going to forget about this topic, instead of resizing all of my sprites again!
