Let's be realistic ourselves too, not just the game.

In CMx2 or Close combat how many men do you have per battle? 2,000?

We have played SOW:WB 14 people with 70,000 men on the battlefield, SR4 off course.

Like I said smaller scenarios with correct 1:1 is fine with me.

Speaking with Randy yesterday I remembered that there's also a increase of difficulty factor if on uses the 1:1 ratio, is not only a graphical thing. The average dimension of battalions of WL is bigger than those of GB. A battalion like one of those if british guard in line can be also 300 yards or more long, this mean not only their movements fo redeploy are less rapid, but also the relative distances of actions are impacted, because the targeting is done not betweent the distance flag to flag but between sprite to sprite.

Consider the case of a brigade under the control of player:

1 battalion in line, sufficiently big in sprites terms, is 200 yards from the nearest enemy, so out of range from the musket fire (not engaged and not engaging). The player wants make a flank movement against the enemy, so it gave a lateral destination ; the line of battalion rotates but doing this his flank enter in the musket range because is long; at this point it resulted engaging and engaged so a set of AI routines, aimed to the reaction of self-protection when a target exists and TC on the unit is Off, are triggered and the movement orders by the player can be nullified. In cases like this the approach of players who wants play with big units should be: move unit back and move lateral only have gained space for the movement (which is something the AI sometime does by themself if LOS is blocked and it overlaps with another unit) or TC on the single unit.

This can give the impression that there's less control respect GB but the fact is that the unit dimension increased and engagement distances shortened, so the approach to the action has to be different: have second line units and use skirmishers as supports is far more important

To put it in a nutshell, the game wasn't designed for 1:1. You may think you want to play it in 1:1, but when you factor in all the issues that come along with it (the biggest issue is the maps aren't in 1:1), it's not worth it. 1:1 is more of something to temporarily play around with for novelty purposes.

Ok. If we are not going to get the correct number of sprites. Is it possible to get a number in brackets next to each unit count indicating the correct historical numbers? So that when I click on a unit it shows me a statistic indicating historical strength vs sprite strength. This would go a long way to aiding my suspension of disbelief and allowing me to imagine what it should look like. This would stop me learning the wrong numbers.

That has always been in scourge of war, and the take command games too.

Infact you can get detailed statistics on all battalions, dead, wounded and missing.

When you click on a unit in gettysburg, you get the correct historic number i that unit, when you clik on a corps commander, you get the correct number of troops under him.

Yes, the game has always given army and unit strengths, casualties, etc, in actual men, never in sprites. Numbers of sprites are irrelevant anyway because the sprite ratio is adjustable.

Sprites are 50/50 just show actually representing stuff

The only thing usefull the sprites show is "size of unit" in how much room it occupies. And when a unit is being hammered it can show how fast soldiers die. Givi g a hint that it might be in trouble. Other then that its all under the hood.
