I too have a Radeon card in my computer, 5800 series, and have had no problems. Try updating to the latest drivers if you haven't already. Maybe that will help. What OS are you using?

Hi Marching Thru Georgia well that rules out ATi Radeon cards then. My OS operating system is an Acer predator desktop gaming computer. I updated my drivers recently so I am up to date with them but with the previous drivers SOW still ran poorly. I have found that drivers make a heck of a difference to performance on Napoleon and Shogun total war and the drivers I have installed at the moment are running those very smoothly so I really don’t want to mess about in that department.

Yes, I can't blame you for not wanting to perturb a working system. In my case, 1.4 made my system slow a bit. Nothing like what you describe, though. I updated the drivers and everything was back to normal and even better as I can now run 120k size battle. By OS, I meant what flavor of windows are you running? If you are running Vista or Win7, it might be worthwhile to try running the game in XP compatible mode. Given the upgrade that the AI got in this release, it would be well worth your time to try to get the game to run. Best of luck.

Re: Poor performance post- v1.4.
I play SP and MP with usually 60,000 to 80,000 troops on the field. With SP and the new patch there is a little sluggishness and some jerky movement, but not enough to be annoying. Now here is the strange thing: In multi-player everything runs as smooth as silk--none of that sluggishness that I experience in SP. I would have thought that MP would give me problems if anything would, but not so.

Thank you for your help Marching through Georgia I Have Vista here are the full details of my system. I did try running it as an XP game but it didn’t make any difference. Let me make something clear for everyone I think this is a great game I am about the biggest fan of TC2M ever it’s probably the best game I ever bought so I really want SOW to run well on my computer so that I can enjoy it as much. There are some of us having problem with computers that should handle the game a lot better but many are enjoying the game using thousands of troops on the battlefield with no problems.
Ok here are some screens taken last night using fraps and “unto the round tops” a great scenario by the way but as you can see I’m getting 4 FPS to 6 FPS on it. The frame rates can be seen in the top left hand corner. Now for you experts here is something really strange when I turn the camera to the sky I still get 8-11 FPS and there’s no real detail showing.

Bump - Can I get an answer to this question, Please!Norb if my video card is only showing this in the Log file – does this mean that I need to convert the Antietam.bmp back to the size of 2048x2048 – considering that that is the only file that I can see that uses the larger size of 16386x16386 ?In your log file you'll now find a line like the following:
20:58:56 Ansi:16, TexH:16384, TexW:16384
This shows the max ansi value and max texture size. It also prints another warning if your card cannot support the larger textures as we are now using 2048 textures for uniforms. .
01:47:33 Ansi:16, TexH:8192, TexW:8192
01:47:33 SOWGB Loaded
01:47:33 01:47:33
If there is another warning I’m not seeing that one show up, so I guess that I am alright there!

The only true logic is that, there is no true logic!

There is no 16386x16386 BMP file.

It sounds as if the OS has set the priority too low. I don't know if you can set that in Vista, but it might be worthwhile to check into that. The only other issue I can think of is that AMD cpu's do not have hyperthreading, (each core behaves as if it is 2 cores). Most Intel cpu's do.Ok here are some screens taken last night using fraps and “unto the round tops” a great scenario by the way but as you can see I’m getting 4 FPS to 6 FPS on it. Re: Poor performance post- v1.4.
I found how to change the priority for SOW and changed it from “Normal” to “High” but got the same frame rates. I checked about the hyper threading and my system has that feature. Great idea anyway Marching Thru Georgia and worth trying as I’m sure it is something simple like a setting needing changed.
Can anyone please tell me if changing the game difficulty will improve the FPS? I play on grognard level and was thinking if I changes it to Normal it would reduce the Ai cycles.

Jubal Early,
Try pausing the game and looking at the ground (up close so nothing is visible except grass).
If the framerate goes up when you pause it, that means that part of the slowdown is from game calculations (perhaps AI, but not necessarily).
