Hi Garnier on the same “Onto the round tops “ scenario If I look at the grass on its own I get 8 – 10 FPS if I pause the game still looking at the grass I get 15-17 FPS.

There is no 16386x16386 BMP file.
Well, I meant that the 4096x4096 equals 16384 .

Jumping Topic

Jubal Early - You have a higher Windows Score than I do, I'm also using Vista - try these two things.....

1) Click on the Task Bar \ Task Manager \ go to the Processes - How many are you running in the background?.....It shows in the bottom left-hand corner.....

2) Start the Game and without pauing the Game - Press the Windows Tab - near the ALT Key left side of spacebar - this will take you back into Windows with the Game running.

Right-Click on the Taskbar \ Task Manager \ Processes \ what are your Memory Usage Showing?

Wow, 25% cpu usage with the system siting quietly is a lot. It should be more like 1-2%. Go back to the task manager and click on the Processes tab. Which process other than the System Idle Process is eating up your cpu?

Yes, before you changed your post I was going to comment on the CPU Usage also.

This is a picture of mine with the game still running in the background and 18,000 men of my army marching at the same time.
The attachment taskbar.jpg is no longer available

Davinci this is mine with the “unto the round tops “scenario running ive no idea the numbers of troops but they are moving. Is that one of the biggest scenarios? There seems to be a lot going on in the background. What kind of FPS are you guys getting on it?

Jubal Early my first and probably my second opinion would be that I were probably getting better FPS before the Patch 1.4 and the newer-png-packed graphics.

So, I think that it does help some, while not helping others, so it all depends on the Computer-System of each user.

Also – I do remember someone posting about a year ago that also had a SLI dual-graphics card such-as yourself and the frames per second was not that good. So that may also be another problem that you are having with the game, I’m guessing at that!

Several Answers to your Questions above –

I’m not sure which Scenario is the most demanding, I only play the Open Play Games.

My FPS used to start out at around 15 FPS with both armies having approximately 40,000 men each. While moving the men the FPS would drop to roughly 7-8 FPS, but would climb back up when the marching stopped, and the fighting began.

Basically, while the units are moving this will take a toll of the FPS due to the fact that the units are going through a lot of AI-road-calculations .

I can now run approximately 18,000 – 24,000 men per army, but this is due to the detailed graphics that I’m experimenting with on the maps.

If, I had to guess at anything, I’ll say that you may have to find out if there is a way of shutting down some of the programs running in the background on your Computer, sixty-six is sort of high.

Davinci Thanks again for your help, I downloaded a program called smart close and it enabled me to close down all background programs. I ran the game and noticed perhaps a slight improvement maybe 1 fps . I then reduced the number of trees to 75% changed mipmaps=5 to mipmaps=1 and that seemed to help a little more. I am currently getting an average of 7-9 FPS on the round tops scenario. Im not sure if that’s good or bad but its an improvement.

The upgrade to 4 megs of RAM stopped the stuttering movement. The only problem I'm experiencing is during multiplayer-- the screen will often go black when I scroll to the heavy fighting. It almost looks as if my computer is being toggled back and forth between the game and the desktop using "alt+tab," game screen to black screen, game screen to black screen, over and over. Of course, my compatriot in arms sees this as the game slowing to a crawl. I'm able to make this problem stop, whenever I want, by using the arrow key to toggle to a leader who isn't near the fighting. Moving the camera to a quiet area of the map isn't good enough. It has to be to a leader or unit in a quiet sector.

I'll be trying some other tricks like lower terrain settings, smaller multiplayer games, etc. I won't be getting a new video card, and will wait at least a year before getting a new computer. And at this point I'm thinking... so what. SCOWG is still the best game I've ever played on the computer. I can see myself playing it years from now. I just won't be getting any new mods.
