There's no denying that that TW games do look fantastic, especially Napoleon where the grasses and clutter around the battlefield add so much to the immersion. I agree their trees do look a little cartoony, the colour saturation is too high. It's the same with SoW. I use the terrain mod which flattens the colours down in the trees and makes the game look better. The gameplay is the weak point in the TW franchise though, and of course their standard 'conquer the world' campaign mechanic based around the ownership of regions and the tech tree system which isn't applicable to many modern wars. Its a pity they didn't redesign their campaign game to a more appropriate format when they started releasing games set in more modern times (ETW onwards).

I know modders are doing wonderful things to ETW and NTW to make an ACW game and it does look great but I do sometimes wonder why... given how limited that game engine is. You North & South guys should just come play some multiplayer Scourge of War and find how how an ACW RTS should be made ;)

10 players a side, each commanding 5000 man divisions on a battlefield 5 miles across with battles lasting 2 hours. It can be epic at times.

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed. Hinkel, at 1.11, why is the CSA belt buckle reversed?

Hehe, I have to answer on that one :D

1) Well, North and South for NTW and The blue and the grey for ETW are both done by the same guys.
For ETW, we designed the biggest mod for ETW and the first civil war campaign for a TW game.
With North and South, we want to show the battle of antietam and its for MP battles only.

2) I'm a SOW player too, but there are many guys, who like to play civil war games with 3d graphics. And the NTW engine is very nice and it let you design a unique battlefield, which get the same quality as SOW antietam ;)
You see many different fence types, new plants like the corn field, new houses and many other antietam locations.

3) About the buckle: well, thats an 3d exporter problem. Will be fixed of course :D

2 additional screenshot. Who can ID that unit here? ;)

Also, how about a battle replay system like the one that existed in the SMG series? I'd also like to see resupply be re-done and more realistic instead of just one wagon that can move anywhere. It should be a wagon train that cannot move off roads. Hmm...moddable?

And another nice feature would be to set the "open fire" range for your troops for individual regiments.

I'm wondering if a campaign is a direction that Norbsoft is going to make a reality? All the tools are there within SWG. The game seems to be perfectly designed for it.

As for wagons, in Rosecrans offensive into northern Georgia his infantry had to take their guns and wagons up mountains and then back down the other side. Wagons don't necessary need to be tied to roads. I would also like to see some improvement in supply if possible.

To have a great game, you really do not need great graphics. The best graphics engine we all know is our own imagination...here is a true example of a game that captured my imagination, and gave me many hours of enjoyment.

This game is for those who can stand using their imaginations over long periods of time...

You can also create your own battle scenarios as well.

The more I think about it, the more that Waterloo/Austerlitz (based on the SMG engine) had it right. Battle stress and cohesion work so much better than morale and fatigue as it is in SoW. Units with poor cohesion should never be able to succesfully charge another unit that has good cohesion. This would of course mean that column charges would be more difficult unless the attacker can maintain his cohesion up to the point of combat.

And of course melee should totally destroy a unit's cohesion.

And melee should be changed so that it doesn't result in huge casualties. At the exact point of contact, whichever side has a lesser morale should break. If they both have equal morale, then there is hand to hand fighting.

Musket fire should also be far more devastating at close range. Firing should begin with volley fire and then turn into ragged volleys and then fire-at-will the longer that units shoot. Thus, the longer a unit is firing the less effective its fire will be. Combined with an option to choose the open fire range of units, this would give advantages to holding fire until the enemy is close or choosing to pepper him from far away.

I think these are all reasonable and historical changes.

I would like to see SOW have the ability to zoom out like the picture so you can see the concentration of troops, and of course have the ability to zoom in to any part of the map...

Just a thought...

Satellite imagery in the 19th century?

They didn't have satellite imagery in World War 2 either but there you are.

I'll give you a simple example...

While playing the game, you scroll out (using either the mouse wheel, or key), and soon you see that you are inside a tent, hey it's Lee's tent. The map is laying on a table with other maps strewn about, and you see the some other articles which commanders would have in the tent such a bed (whatever they had in their tents back then), etc (hey cool), and you also see men standing around the table looking over the map. As you were panning out you would see clouds pass over, and you are watching your battle unfold before you... This is simply for absolute cool factor, and it does serve a function since I am very sure that maps were on tabletops back then (if realism is your thing)... See what I am trying to say?

For me I wouldn't mind having this option to move about the map, it's not only cool to have but very easy on the eyes, and easy to command your troops (moving them around the map). The zoom out like in R.U.S.E is pretty handy tool, it's shows you the layout of the land, etc, etc...

Each to his own...

I would say that the game really does need to stick with the basics of the time, and continue on the current path as being the best Civil War game that has been created.

Absolutely no satellite imaging, no radars, no spaceships, or any other mindless invention that was not around at this particular time.

The current format is excellent, and with the new additions that Norb had the vision to include...such as...The Splats, The PNG Files, and the New Courier System, the game is moving in the right direction.

Once the Multi-Player aspect of the game is ironed-out, and there are larger maps for the Single-Players, this game will stand alone, and ahead of the rest.

Keep, the game entirely based on the time-period of the Civil War.
