I'm not sure if volley fire is going to be on the list for the first game, mainly because (I am told) it was not used in any of our scenarios. It will be added at some point, a patch, an expansion, or might even still make it in the first game.

Volley fire is important to include in any ACW game that wishes to represent itself as historical. It is no doubt a difficult factor to include in a tactical game, but it cannot be ignored as a major morale factor - seeing dozens of men fall at an instant would panic the poorest ranks, but also might re-en vigor the most gallant troops, so it would most likely be a challenge to incorporate into the game, but well worth doing.

are you saying that administering volley fire would cause the most green (poorest?) ranks to panic, right after they shot at the enemy?
that's interesting, one would think the effects of any volley fire would only help morale...

In the Peninsular campaign in Spain there was an instance when several thousand Spanish troops routed after they fired a volley at some French cavalry. However in the ACW, I know of no similar instances. There are a number of occasions where a line of battle was held out of sight behind a wall or where a hill crested and stood up and delivered a volley at short range. This could repel an attack by even veteran troops, see for example the repulse of the attack of Hoke & Hays brigades by the Vermont brigade at Chancellorsville.
The reason that volley fire is lower on the feature list for this game is that there are no instances in this battle where volley fire was a significant factor. We are concentrating first on those new things that are needed to properly depict this battle.

How about a "Fire" - "Hold Fire" option like there is for the arty in TC2M?

Wow !!!
:woohoo: :woohoo:
Volley Fire would be an also realistic addition to the game.
I remember how awesome it looked and the results when you used it in Sid Meier's Gettysburg game....

However, all of us plan on rewriting the history of this battle everytime we play the game. What may not have been a factor then could be important in the player's tactics. Maybe volley fire can be added later after the initial push to get the first game out the door is over.
