Raging Cavalry

I have to say, SOW is quite a nice evolution of the TCM series. I just played the "Boys Got Their Dander Up Scenario." Unfortunately, I had a CTD as I was about to finish, (already reported by others). One odd behavior I did notice is that the dismounted cavalry has a frequent tendency to mount up and charge the enemy. When they run out of ammo this always occurs. Since Custer is not leading the division, I would have expected them to retreat back to the ammo wagon for re-supply. Even when they are in supply and well outside any charge radius they will occasionally mount and have at it. Is their charge radius larger than that of the infantry? Perhaps in a future patch this behavior can be toned down a bit. Other than this, the AI seems to be much improved over TCM2. No more regiments marching through the firing lines!

Good to hear you have noticed the improvements in the AI.
About the crash, did you happen to hit the "raid weak enemy" button? That's a known issue that causes a CTD. If it just randomly crashed I have not seen any reports of this. See if you can re-produce the problem with a saved game and report back.

I don't think I pressed the "Raid Weak Units" button. I thought I was trying to dismount a unit when the CTD occurred. I will have to go back to an earlier save position and try to recreate the effect. I am using a 64 bit version of XP and it could be related to that. I noticed that TCM2 will on rare occasions crash on this machine. When I was using a 32 bit vesion I never had a CTD. Sorry for the lack of help.

Obviously crashes will be our #1 priority for a patch. The problem is that we cannot fix them if we cannot recreate them. I can fix anything that I can witness. So any info/saved games/etc. are greatly desired. Or even the steps to recreate.

I seem to have the opposite problem - Devin's brigade will sit there and shoot 1 round at the enemy and run away, even when I've got the individual regiments TC'd. Oddly enough, the other brigade seems to cooperate.

As mentioned earlier, is that the way how it should be.

It seems like if I'm the division commander and I tell Devin's regiments to use a fence for defensive cover I would expect them to use the cover offered and stay where I placed them, at least until they've sustained losses or have a drop in morale and fatigue. I've just tried this scenario a couple times briefly, but I can't get these pig headed cavalrymen to do what I want. I place them and they move. I dismount them and they mount and charge. And then Gamble walks his horse right over and into the reb battleline. I'm surprised Buford didn't join the artillery. I'll practice this scenario more in the next couple days. I probably just haven't figured out yet how all this is supposed to work. Anyone having better luck with it?

I had the same problems, not with charging but with random retreating. I was able to overcome and win the scenario but my cavalry were far too skittish.

As far as commanders walking into enemy lines, that's being addressed.
The cavalry can be a little tough to manage, but they make up for with their powerful repeating rifles. If you give them the right cover and support, they will tear the rebs apart.

I think I would get my money's worth out of this game even if I did nothing but watch the AI handle everything and I'd just sit back and watch all the action and take in the scenery. But my troops need someone to blame for their losses, so back I go into the cauldron.
