The Sample-1 OOB and Colonel Day

In looking over the Sample OOB, I became interested in both it and in the Kansas map.

I decided to try taking the part of Colonel Day and his brigade of the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 12th US Infantry regiments, perhaps the best units on the field.

The Kansas map was quite interesting - I had chosen a division battle and my level of command was Day's Brigade.

When the order to march came, I took the brigade to the extreme left of the division and as chance had it, encountered Anderson's fine brigade made up of 59th Ga, 8th Ga, 9th Ga and others. Very tough Rebels, indeed.

My U.S. Infantry behaved splendedly and the AI handled Anderson's brigade quite well. The result was the most enjoyable fight I have had with the game to this point.

There was a battery of guns supporting Anderson and once we captured 4 of the six guns, they turned on the enemy and signalled the beginning of the end of this very exciting battle.

The 59th GA and 9th GA were very resilient and repeatedly withdrew in good order to reform and continue the fight either by counter-attacking or defending. Eventually, I was able to isolate 59th GA and the Rebel Commander. Then the remainder of the Reb brigade finally broke and retreated/surrendered. The mighty 59th GA continued the fight over a distance of several hundred yards of retreating and making stands before the game recognized that the battle had ended.

It is very worthwhile to Google for "Colonel Hannibal Day" and see the remarkable circumstances that placed him in command of this very fine brigade at GB.

The Kansas map is also worth a look-see. I like it very much for sand box battles.
