Browsers

Well, I've still been using IE as my browser, and a pop-up came up earlier saying that version 8.0 is now available in beta = so I installed it. Installation was gravy, but now that it's running , I'm a bit skeptical. Of course - they added another favorites toolbar (like we need another -right ? ), and it says it's faster, and has more security protection = but we will see. One thing that I noticed & it's bugging me - is that it has changed the size of webpages = everthing is bigger ( which I know some of you with older eyes will probably like ) - but I'm opposite = I am near-sighted and see better with smaller text up close. Guess I'll have to go into the guts of this thing & adjust that.
Anyways, feel free to add to this thread if anyone else updates to IE 8.0. Also, I was wondering if anyone has tried Google's browser yet ? Firefox users - are you still happy with their product ? Any others that I've left out - please comment on them.

I use Opera and am very happy with it. I would never use IE, just because most attacks are usually focused on it as well as most hackers.

Chantilly,
you're a brave man installing a Beta version of anything microSoft. They're apparently up to IE ver.8 now and my Xp is looking at Service Pack3! Those microsoft updates just keep coming! And Vista? Keep hearing wierd things about it too!
When i installed IE7, the text size default was 'larger' or maybe it was 'medium' i forget but i changed the size to 'smaller' since i've got a larger monitor.
Don't know about IE8, but IE7 has three ways i know of to change the text or screen size;
-the top command bar, 'Text Size' listed in the 'View' menu,
-top 2nd command bar 'Size' button. Needed to 'customize' to get it to show up there,
-the '+100% zoom-level' pull-up menu in the bottom status-task bar in the extreme right corner.
I'll take a wild geuss that most or all of this likely applies also to the new version unless its a complete overhaul.

I hear ya my old friend - but I read somewhere that IE8 will soon be the standard, so figured what the hey, LOL. I've got most of those darn command bars hidden = all I need is my favorites pinned to the left & a few functions up top , I also keep minimal icons on my main Winders toolbar @ the bottom.
The resizing was just a matter of the old Ctrl key + the (-) key. Thanks for the help though. I'll kick it around a few days & see how it runs. Had a hell of a time pasting a Word document onto a website earlier this morning, then trying to get it to look right. Imagine that ? A MS product not jiving with a MS product ?

Hey Chantilly thanks, <Cntrl>+- !!
Now i know one more way to change text size!
I myself am gonna hold on to IE7 long as i can especially considering the amount of time invested to download all those IE7 uSoft patches/updates with my dial up.
Speaking of Browsers, MSN Explorer was the default browser on my PC when i bought it. Worst browser ever invented, even worse than IE!!
And I can hardly wait til uSoft forces me to install Vista and have to learn everything all over again! I understand Vista is already at SP1.

Actually for both of you,
You can just hold the control key and roll your mouse wheel up and down. That's the easiest way of changing the size. B)

Where is my wheel ? (Searches laptop) :silly:
ADukes - we all laugh at your grapic on the MMG boards, can you comment on why you don't like Firefox ?
Whatever happened to NetScape ? I used to prefer that over IE many moons ago.

Whatever happened to NetScape ?
Netscape was the first browser i used way back in the early days of the internet. I liked it too.
Netscape was gobbled up by AOL a few years ago and the browser was eventually discontinued under the name Netscape. My understanding is that Netscape is no longer officially supported. Now here's where it gets a little murky for me. After the Netscape acquisition, AOL also had something to do with the Mozilla browser.
There was a real interesting documentary on one of the cable channels about how Bill Gates in the early days of uSoft ruthlessly set out to destroy Netscape which was the dominant browser at the time. Gate's goal (of course) was to monopolize his browser just as he monopolized the IBM-based PC OS. Unfortunately Gates accomplished his goal and we have today uSoft product releases buggier than a hot Louisiana night... with never ending versions, patches, updates and Service Packs.
Why doesn't uSoft thoroughly test its prototypes before releasing? Its called 'time to market', releasing a product (sometimes prematurely) solely for competitive-strategic marketing purposes whether said product works or not.
There is some merit to this marketing philosophy which can lead to a company's dominant leverage of a product line by getting a product out before their competitors. Its so far worked for uSoft but then again uSoft is for all practical purposes, a monoply. Its less likely to work for startup companies trying to get a market share foothold.
Having been employed by a modem/tele-communications manufacturer for 15 years as a design, test and reliability engineer, i saw first hand 'time to market' in operation. Sad to say, with maybe the possible exception of Hewlett Packard, Apple, etc. in most hi-tech consumer-oriented companies, the marketing dept. always trumps the engineering dept which is a CEO's dream... but can be an engineer's and a customer's nightmare!!

Not to bring a thread back from the dead, but in my MaximumPC mag I got this month they recommended opera if you didn't like using Firefox or IE. I have been using IE 8 and it has some really slow loading times.
I remembered that norb said he used opera too, so I downloaded it and BAMMMM, what a difference. Fast load times and browsing the internet is a pretty good experience. I will have to learn some of the different features but it is much faster than IE.
