I commented on this a few months ago, i ordered a regiment into skirmish formation and had them sniping at a battery.
BOOM - FIZZLE - no regiment left.
Skrimishers would be under cover, kneeling, lying etc and spread out. They should definetly receive far less damage than a regiment in formation, no matter how close they were to the battery.
