Considering that Sherman was posted at the Big Black River with about 35,000 men just waiting for him to attack it wouldn't have been pretty. Johnston would have had to attack across the river and would have been stomped. Of course, Johnston was a cautious general and would probably have only probed, found Sherman too strong to attack and pulled back to Jackson. And Grant still had at least 40,000 surrounding Vicksburg, though he didn't really need that many with the state of Pemberton's troops at that point. If Sherman had to call for help, Grant could probably have pulled 10,000 troops from the siege to send to Sherman and still kept Vicksburg bottled up.Wow, nice find, ty for sharing
Wonder what would have happend if Johnston would have attacked Grant with his army.
