Couriers question

Hi all,
I just purchased the game, but I am at work and won't get to download and play before tonight. In the meanwhile, perhaps someone can give me some enlightenment about couriers.
I just read the review on Out of Eight. That is maybe the most trusted games review site from my perspective, and I am not surprised the game got an excellent review, as I have played a good bit of Take Command: 2nd Manassas, and it is a great game.
But one thing the reviewer criticized was courier AI, saying that couriers often wander through enemy fire for no good reason and get shot. That is consistent with my memories of TC2M. If true, it's no deal-breaker, but I'll just set the realism so that I don't have to give orders by courier.
But I'd prefer to give orders by courier if they'll have the sense to take back roads. Do folks agree this is a problem? Has this been addressed in a patch, or will it be?
TIA. Otherwise, I'm very much looking forward to playing.
