Get a regiment to conserve ammo?

I had two regiments of sharpshooters today and they were like having a gatling gun!
At one point they were almost out of ammo and exhausted and I wanted to rest them. Couldn't get 'em to stop. Eventually I hit "retreat" and finally realised I could try taking them to a wagon to re-arm.
How can you get sharpshooters to stop firing?

Nope.

Actually, you might be able to switch them to targeting artillery if there is none nearby (you may have to have them TC'd in that instance). I don't know if ordering them to lie down will keep them from simply hopping back up and firing. Also, you can run your wagon up to a unit's marker, even if the unit is in combat, and it will resupply them.

I tried to get em to lie down but they were iron-willed. I didn't have asupply wagon under my command so after they had stopped retreating I gave them a commander and accompanied them to an allied wagon... Managed to get them back into long range rifle practice.

If they are not under fire – you can press the
Stop \ Halt button, and immediately press the
Lie-down button – before they start back firing.
You will probably have to repeat this process until you can get them to lie down.

Here's a trick I've seen work. Make them repeatedly charge (uphill if possible) Confederate infantry or artillery. Before you know it, they'll stop firing, which conserves ammo pretty well.
