Allowed Back !

Post by Ingles of the 57th »

Hi Friends,

Ingles has finally been allowed back. Probably on probation.

I have been out for three months. Three month's of "unable to access website" on norbsoftdev for some reason that neither my satellite network technical people nor Norb could explain. Then, just as suddenly, it is all working again. What joy. You just really can't imagine the frustration of being cut off from the forum for all that time.

All I have to contend with now is the near non-existent power supply in Zimbabwe. Four days of continuous outage and a host of 'dim and flaring lamps'.

Hope to participate again when I have caught up the backlog.

Best regards,

Geoff Laver aka Ingles of the 57th

Welcome back Sir. Can't you find a more stable country around there to set up shop...? Never mind, it must be home to you, despite the inconveniences...and I bet it's beautiful, that untamed land...

A UPS can be a godsend where power is unreliable.

It's that District 9 that's messing everything up down there.

Thanks voltigeur.

I do have inverters and a generator. But we are not talking about short outages but jumbo ones lasting three or four days. There is just not enough up-time to keep the batteries charged. Even mobile phone batteries ! And running generators comes expensive for a pensioner.

What back-up power we have has to be reserved for running freezers etc. Anything diverted to killing people (or talking about it) by necessity slips down the priorities a bit.

Since I installed dual ASUS graphic cards (with CROSSLINK) I have had to upgrade my computer Power Supply Unit to to 1KW. This eats up the battery supply at a scary rate. To run my computer I need a powerful inverter ($800) plus two deep cycle batteries ($200 each).

Since my access to SOWG has become a bit limited, I really do value even more highly the time that I can spend with the game.

Not much chance of any improvement. No new generating capacity has been added here since independence 30 years ago and maintenance on the antiquated time-expired equipment currently installed is minimal.

Hi Reb Bugler. Thanks for your kind words. This is a beautiful country despite the problems. Very like Virginia. We eat grits and grow tobacco. I have appended an image of the view from my bedroom window. Plenty of Little Round Tops there.

Absolutely breathtaking... Lived in Virginia, and that ain't Virginia...that's a wonderland, and indeed a Home worth keeping, despite the techno mishaps and lack of infrastructure. Thanks for sharing, that image is engraved here and in this forum's soul forevermore...:)

Just a random thought - can you do anything with solar or wind power? I would assume the parts might be difficult to get where you are, but I've read of numerous people who did their own simple solar panel or wind turbine setup (We're talking a small turbine set in a 5-gallon bucket filled with concrete or some such - and being on a mountainside as you appear to be, wind ought to be plentiful) . They won't generate a ton of electricity, but usually enough to charge up car batteries that can be used for other things, like, say, your computer batteries?

That is just beautiful, what a view! Almost looks like a different planet. You are lucky to have such a view.

We just got hit with a snowstorm. Love the snow at night, very quiet.
