Wondering why we use bare map
In my opinion we should at least use friendly only, because if you think about it we are sitting here and telling this person to go to the left of so and so or take so and so spot on the line, and they might try and click the map to see where they are talking about but all the see is a bare map.
What ever happened to using TS rules by the way?

Yes agreed on this, it would be a nice concession to play and make things less confusing at the start, please allow friendlies to be seen on map.
Re: Wondering why we use bare map
Just let the host know and he can change that setting to allow friendlies on the map.
I always hosted with blank map back when we played HITS, and never thought too much about it. Obviously when you can move your view anywhere instantly to see everything, you may as well be able to see the whole army's location at a glance.
During my absence in the summer I guess everyone stopped playing HITS. TS rules probably would be confusing without HITS as you wouldn't be constantly reminded of where your guy was on the battlefield.
I think HITS with TS rules and blank map would be fun sometimes, but admittedly it can give a person a headache when he's riding around a lot and the view never stops moving. I imagine that's why we've stopped using it.

Re: Wondering why we use bare map
Good points Pender. We went to 200 yards from the saddle on Friday, and will probably stay that way for now.
And that makes a big difference in MP game-play. I enjoyed when we used to play with 50 yards from the saddle, and perhaps we'll get there again soon, but for now, 200 yards will do until everyone gets familiar with it.
Is there a way to change the bare map to only show friendlies?

I had thought there was but there isn't.
But if we're using HWCROTS (headquarters within canister range of the saddle), maybe bare minimap is best -- so you do have to rely on your fellow commanders to tell you where they are. The thing that HWCROTS limits is your ability to see where the armies are in game.
Good idea to ease back into it, we'll bring it down to 10 yards so slowly no one will know what happened!
It will make a huge difference for me.. since I've usually had my forces spread along the entire line without difficulty, now I'll have to stay in one place.

I thought there was a friendly setting but their isn't, all in 700 would probably be the best in my opinion.

Re: Wondering why we use bare map
Gentlemen,
On the issue of maps - what maps are we all using? Specifically, the Mini-map, not the one we are playing on. I currently am using the "stock" maps that came with the game. I guess these are the "Warren" maps? Anyway, when I changed over to the new computer, and reinstalled the game, that's what was there, of course. So I just started using them again. There are enough names of farms and whatever for us to use them in reference to where we are AND where we want someone to go. I can tell most, if not all, of us know where the major landmarks are (ie: Cemetery Ridge, etc.). But it would be useful for some of us to hear something like, "...O'Neill, place your left flank on or near the Pitzer farm and face east. Barlow extend your line south from there..." Even the dullest of us, (that would be me), can find that on a map.
Also, another thought, (Oh God, two in one day...be still my heart). Could he who has had Army Command devolved upon him quickly read out the dispositions of our sides forces? Something like our divisions from right to left or whatever, so we have some idea where we are in the line of battle? Would be kind of nice, (and possibly Historical, as the CG would have given orders, maybe the night before, telling where and when his subordinates should form up before heading into the maelstrom?).
Okay, so my 13 and a half cents there (allowing for inflation).

I still use my textured minimaps. Some of the names on the stock maps aren't on these minimaps, and vice versa. The marked locations on these textured minimaps include all of the locations that can be named in courier orders, plus many of the hills, roads and creeks.
For knowing where everyone is, anyone can see this just by clicking on a unit in each division. It's a good idea for someone to say where everyone is at the start.

Re: Wondering why we use bare map
I love the use of "bare maps". It adds a type of historical accuracy.
I stopped using couriers because the paths they take and tc'd units do not respond, but would love to play with them again.
