Scourge of War Boards

I am trying to create a 3-D map of the gettysburg battlefield, but I'm having a hard time finding any good topographical maps of Gettysburg. Anybody know where i can possibly find or buy some? Thanks!

I don't know how much of a change in the surrounding terrain there has been since 1800's, but you could try and search here for a DEM covering the area? They are collecting lidar data of the US for a national dataset. Not sure if its free, but sounds like it could be.

Once you had something as accurate as that as a base layer, it would be easy to add man made features.

We actually used the DEM as our base, but because of the various edits to the real landscape since then we had to use the oldest maps to 'tune' the terrain. We also went out and walked some specific areas during our team annual meetings. This allowed us to make the finer adjustments needed to correct some specific things that were just in or out of LOS that should have been the other way around.

I purchased some great topographical maps from Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg a number of years ago. They're great maps; they look just like USGS topo maps. Here is a link to their site:

"Dr. Thomas A. Desjardin was the cartographer for the development and production of this excellent set of four battlefield maps for The Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg. The four maps depict: 1 - The topography of the battlefield as it existed in July of 1863; 2 - Troop positions as of Early Afternoon July 1, 1863; 3 - Troop Positions as of Late Afternoon July 2, 1863; 4 - Troop Positions for Day 3 - July 3, 1863. The base map upon which all of the information is depicted was carefully researched and shows fences, structures, roads, etc. from the 1868-69 survey supervised by G.K.
