I just wanted to ask why the courier's would take such a strange route to relay a message when there is a much shorter route? Mind you the way they did take is great for reconnaissance if not for anything else.
The
red is the actual route they took, the
blue route is what I would have expected.

I believe the courier will now take a direct route if the destination is within 700 yd. Otherwise it will use the road system just as before. That's pretty reasonable, since in most cases, line of sight wouldn't be much more than that.

Okay thanks. There is one thing though, in the above screenshot the blue line is actually a usable road. The screen shot doesn't show this but two couriers were sent. One started going east then take a more direct southern route to relay orders too troops in the south (very well chosen route I might add), the second courier decided to take the route shown by the red line which I did find a little odd. It didn't affect the game any, I still lost the match...bloody rebs, and their rebel yell scared the men half to death.

Ah, both routes are roads. The blue one might have longer off-road distances at the beginning and/or end of the trip, so the AI felt it was a toss up. Did both couriers take the same amount of time?

Hi MTG.
Nope. The one that first headed East, then directly South was very quick with their delivery.

It might be where they were located. The courier locates the closest road to them and the closest road to their target, then paths between those two points. If the target was close to a road that could not be reached the other way, it might have forced the long path. Many variables, but there's usually a logical conclusion.
