Reading Shelby Footes history of the civil war, and I can honestly say reports of how great it is have not been exaggerated. Unfortunately, it has me foaming at the mouth for some sort of strategic overview, controlling armies on a wider scale, marching trying to outnumber and surprise each other etc. A great game (although buggy as hell - crash crash crash) was Napoleon Wargamer 1813.
It had a real time map of europe, similar to the type you play in the Hearts of Iron games, but with roads visualised on them. At higher difficulty levels you had to send orders to generals by courier (the further they were away from you (as napoleon) the longer it took). You could order AI controlled generals to 'march towards the sounds of the guns', there were depots, supply lines, strategic chokepoints, troop recruitment, it was a great attempt.
I installed it again recently, it crashed...
