Yesterday evening we tested with a friend (a new player) to make a play, he hosted because with my connection I cannot. He use a ADSL with USB modem (no router), win7, AV and firewall those of Win protection. He could not host, because apparently the port of game result closed (a question: the port used by the game cannot be set by the interface? some ISP close particular ports) . Next test we try to enter in another people match in theory the port open in the client PC, is no important in this case; result I can connect, he not. We tried the lan connection with tunngle, but also in this case didn't work (i'm not sure if effectly with tunngle the game can work). take present my friend play to many other games without problems and we tried also closign completly the Win protection system. What can be and what we can test for find where the ip is blocked? Thanks.

Hamachi should work for you.

OK. Let me see if I understand.

Your friend tried to host the game?

He has no router, only a DSL modem.

Does he have any sort of firewall protection?

What is his IP? Did you go to www.whatismyip.com to determine it? Is it a 192.168.xxx.xxx or is it a an IP like 66.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx?

Let's start there.

Yes

>Does he have any sort of firewall protection?

He use only the normal windows securities (windows 7 firewall and AV) but I did him shutdown them.

His ip start with 85.XXX.XXX.XXX

We tested his port here http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open- ... pen-ports/ and it result closed (at example the port 80 result open). So I can only suppose 1: he has some software he don't know, blocking the port or some windows 7 particular settings (he's not a expert and Win7 is not particular user-friendly when you must do change respect the standard), 2 the ISP close the port for all his users).

But the strange is that he cannot also enter as client and this is very strange because in this case the game port is not important, also using the direct ip connection doesn't work.

A thing I saw in his sowgb.ini file the parameter mapport is not present. I suppose because in the game purchased already to 1.3 level this parameter is not anymore necessary.

I don't think this change, tunngle works as hamachi probably also better because is game-oriented and many configuration are done automatically.

The client needs to look like this. The port must be 31791. It On my computer http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ tests it as closed but I know it is configured correctly. It may be closed until the client requests it.

Let me know if the client screen is using this port.

Update: Are you trying to connect directly to him where he is hosting a game?

Yes we tested both the lobby than the direct connection (leaving the 31791 port, what I mean is that the 31791 is not necessary to be open on the client PC, from what I saw when I connect as client the port associated to my ip is always different); he tested also the direct connection as client in other people match

Obviously there is an issue with his computer. Without being there it's difficult to troubleshoot his computer. If he can, I would suggest he contact his ISP and make sure all traffic is hitting his ADSL modem and that there's not some port blocking going on in the modem itself.

Try this:

Have him launch SOWGB, go into multiplayer, hit the host button, and when he gets to the staging area have him alt-esc back to the desktop.

At the desktop open a command prompt and type 'netstat -an' without the quotes. It should look like this. The highlight is mine.

If he shows Windows has port 31791 open (per my picture) Then we've narrowed it down to the modem or his ISP.

Let me know.
