Artillery Questions

I have a question regarding effectiveness of artillery loads. I have heard and experienced the effectiveness of targeting infantry with solid shot, and when inside 200 yards using canister fire. But what is effective for counter battery fire? When are exploding shell more effective and how should it be used? I have been playing some MP games (GCM) and my artillery is gaining in experience and effectiveness, but they need much more improvement.

Artillery is modded in the GCM . because of the mod counter battery fire is ineffective . the only effective use we have with artillery is solid shot on infantry.

Always use solid shot unless in canister range. It's much more effective than anything else. Counter battery isn't effective, so I always click "target infantry" so they don't waste time shooting at guns.

Only place counter battery works is with canister, which happens sometimes when you're in the process of capturing a battery.

(This is in GCM)

Since the patch that came out in March solo arty fire is very good, C'battery fire is also very effective. Solid shot is best against enemy batteries. There is a chance that the enemy ammo chests will get hit! Destroying the ammo is as good as destroying the gun itself. The gun can't be resupplied.

Thank you all for the info. Guess I will keep with the target infantry/ solid shot tactic. Did not know if the exploding shell was any good. I do like the way it sounds and looks in the game though.

While testing my BloodBath mod, exploding shells were taking out chunks of troops at 500 yards...it appears quite effective to me, and definitely is the most impressive visually, especially with the added BB gore.

Another thing to boost arty up some is to add 8 points to the number in the (I)Miss Morale decrease in the
munitions.csv file. Been playing with these numbers for months now, infantry sure don't like hanging-out in a arty barrage, and will withdraw to the rear pretty quickly with two pus batterys shooting at them.

Arty can force another arty gun to withdraw just by morale checks.

Anyway something more to play with.

munitions.csv is not allowed to be modded for MP.
