Taking All Breast Works

Post by CoB4thTEXAS »

On 5th day of September, 1862, we started at sunrise. and waded the Potomac river, the bugles and bands playing, "Maryland, my Maryland," and during the day we marched on the soil of three states, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania crossing entirely through Maryland and going into camp beyond Greencastle, Penn. This march through three states was only about 25 miles as Maryland is very narrow where we crossed the state. In passing through Greencastle late in the afternoon, hot. dusty and weary our regiment was greeted by bevies of neatly dressed women lining the sidewalks, and wearing small U. S. flags pinned on their bosoms. They made all manner of jeering and slighting remarks as we passed, calling us "dirty rebels" and other opprobrious epithets. Finally a tall Texan was asked what command it was, passing. He replied: "This is Hood's Texas Brigade, and they are noted, madam, for storming and taking all Breast Works that carry those colors." This statement the lady received amid a general titter.
