I'm looking to edit manual targeting for Infantry.

Hey.

I'm looking to be able to give manual targeting to the infantry. I know that targeting works very well for Arty (personally it should have been used for infantry as well).

Q: Is it possible to do this since it's already scripted for Arty?

If it is which scripts would I should start looking at? I would love to have the ability to concentrate troops fire. Be really good to use for weakening certain positions...anyway.

Me too. I could have used it in Devils Den the other day (I'm still playing this one to squeeze out the most points...I love that scenario).

I'm pretty sure it could be added to the infantry toolbar, but it would produce unwanted results. This feature was designed for artillery. If it worked properly, I'm sure Rebbugler would have had it on his toolbar by now. :)

Your right, RebBugler would have done it by now.

Well, I can hope for then is to see if this option will be added in the next edition (always can hope).

Just a quick point. In real life, it is far easier to give orders to a 4-6 battery to fire on specific target the it would be to get a 300 man Battalion to concentrate fire on one unit. The time it would take to get the orders to essentially each man just about individually would take forever.

One of my favorite reenacting stories makes this point - I was a captain/adjutant with a federal Infantry Battalion of 80 men. We were in the battleline with two others about the same size with a 4 gun battery deployed behind us about 150 yards back. 3 similar sized Rebel Battalions were across from us. We were all firing like mad things, with the guns adding their sounds. The Brigade Commander rode up and was trying to talk to my Battalion Commander. They were no more than 20 yards away from me. I could see the Brigadier was shouting at the top of his lungs to make himself heard over the din. I couldn't hear a word they were saying. I can't imagine trying to get the infantry to fire on a specific target in all of that.

Hi Jack. :)

I totally understand, and I fully support keeping this as real as possible. It's just I would like to have the option (having difficulty settings turn option on or off). I don't think it hurts the game to have this option for noobs like myself.

I know there are some (perhaps yourself) who most likely play this game sitting in the saddle, and sending out couriers (I tried it once, and man what a headache it gave me, and I got pretty frustrated by it, and I gave up in the first 45 or so minutes). I can only speak for myself here but I have been corrupted by playing top down RTS games such as Dune 2, Generals, and the Close Combat series...etc.

As usual your right on the button there Jack! :blink:

I agree completely. The option should be there as this IS a game.

I only sort of play by courier and don't play HITS with SOWGB. I did with TC2M. Try playing courier this way - You/I are all the commanders. Take command of all manuver elements (brigades, Batteries, etc.) Send your messages by courier, then move your troops when they get there. Ths is easy until you get into combat or are still approaching the fight. Ride ahead, scout the field as they would have done, then issue the orders. THEN GRIT YOUR TEETH AS YOU WAIT FOR THE COURIER TO GET TO THE TROOPS. Then you can have them do what you want. This is almost as hard as normal HITS/Courier battles. You have control, but only just. Also, you must wait until the courier gets there, even if they go off on some roundabout ride from hell to get to the unit in question. If the unit is surprised by the enemy, un-TC it and let them fight until the courier shows up. You will be surprised how nail-biting this can be. Also, this works best at Division level.

I definitely know where your coming from when you mentioned grit your teeth waiting to see if orders get through. When I did play from the saddle/courier I was feeling the same way. At times during the game I got pretty angry at how stupid the courier would be in choosing it's path, then not having my orders followed (must have been the way I was issuing them/setting them up, not too sure though). I have to say it is on of many gut wrenching experiences which left me exhausted, and that is where my small peanut of a brain failed me miserably. I don't mind having a game that tests me out mentally, but I don't like playing a game that makes me feel like I just spent the last few hours at work, and sometimes this game can make me feel that way (depending on the options I choose to play under).

Your right, it is a game, meant to be fun to play, and having a few extra options in there (some may think them to be too gamey) I think will add to the games overall experience. For those who wish to have the gamey extra's on, turn them on, if you don't then turn them off...in my opinion it's about customizing your experience so you can sit back, have a beer or pop (soda for Americans), bag of chips, and have a game, and walk away feeling like the last few hours were spent in a good way.... :blink:
