Wagram - Info, data. sources

Gunship has just released a stunning Napoleonic mod. Truly great work.

Whilst I'm still learning the basics of the new map making tools, a map for this era is something I'd like to try further down the line once I work out what I'm doing and have a few others under my belt.

I'd like to use this opportunity to launch a thread in which to collate info on the Wagram battlefield - i.e. posts or links to maps, the scale of the battlefield, potential sources of height data, photos, info on particular battlefield features etc. To be blunt it's a battle I know little about.

I'll then be able to weigh up how hard it will be to re-create this battlefield, or whether to go for something generic. I'm particularly concerned about accurate height data for example.

Finally, please keep any posts focused as it'll make things easier when I come to sort through the material.

Cheers :)

There are probably a dozen books on the battle. The one I use is J. Gill's Thunder On The Danube. It has everything you are looking for. His other two books on the 1809 campaign are also well worth buying. Coincidentally, I played the battle yesterday evening with HistWar, as the French of course. Napoleon would have been proud of my double flank attack with a late and final punch in the center. :) A fully combined arms attack. None of this Civil War/Seven Years War infantry only maneuvering.

Here you can find many information
http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/Battl ... m_1809.htm
This site is very inrotmative and there you can find many interesting things about Napoleonic armies too.

Battle of Wagram was a very big two day battle and many sources varied in historical data.
It will be hard implement this battle in full scale.

There fought c.a. 130.000 "Austrian" against 180.000 French and their alies.
Big maneuvres, numerous infantry, cavalry and artillery units.
There were more than 400 guns per one side. And before the battle there was large crossing Danube river operation, where many enginering troops were engaged.

Thanks guys

I'll weigh up nearer the time whether to splash out on that book, tho it looks a cracker. I'll also access some that material from the web and save it to my research drive.

A remembered I had the Osprey title tucked away in the spare room. A quick perusal has already proven how damn big the battlefield is. Once I get settled into the SoW map making process I'll give my plans some further thought. Hopefully the Napoleonic mod will have expanded even further by then. B)

Crikey good to see you on the map team, your efforts along with your co-creators are always top notch. I'm sure there is plenty of info out there on Wagram and other battle fields. You can get the elevation data for Europe just not at such a high resolution as the US.
