Regiments / AI believing enemy regiments are somewhere they're not

This has happened in a couple of scenarios at Fox's Gap.

Yesterday, I noticed that the 23rd NC were firing at a regiment I couldn't see. They are firing at the 36th Ohio, who they think are 44 yards to our right (sorry if this is confusing - hopefully the screenshots will be clear).

In the second screenshot, from the POV of the 36th Ohio we can see they are in fact 156 yards away, back thisaway.

Today, I was Ripley's division (incredibly brave, btw)and at one point noticed that the 4th NC was firing at the 23rd Ohio 'over their shoulders', behind their left flank. Again, I hope the picture shows this. Because they were facing the wrong way they then 'fell back' towards the enemy!

Any ideas, gentlemen?

Looks like you are TC'ing the regiments. When regiments are TC'd, they won't change their facing direction on their own. You have to manually wheel them.

Thanks LP.

So, if I TC a regiment they'll stay the way I point them. They shouldn't then be able to fire at a regiment behind their back, though, should they??!!

In yesterday's battle, I was Union so the 23rd NC were not TC'd. Also there is the disparity betwwen the distances. The 23rd NC believe the 36th Ohio are 44 yards away (as shown in top left of screen) but at the same time the 36th Ohio are correct in thinking they are 156 yards away. This seems to be a bug.

I've got this game saved, if that could help.

I hope this makes sense.

They should not and they do not.

I have noticed a strange bug when playing a scenario in antietam, one regiment was firing on an ennemy regiment but my regiment was facing their back to the ennemy regiment, and I must wheel them manually in order have the good facing (because they were taking the facing maluses)

ADukes, I'm afraid I don't understand your statement that "they do not [fire at a regiment behind their back]".

In my screenshot they are doing just that.

The 'Primary Target' of the 4th NC is the 23rd Ohio, who are behind them.

They can look like they're trying to shoot when they actually can't. If you TC the regiments you have to face them in the right direction manually. Use the comma and period keys to wheel the regiments. Some people un-TC regiments once they start firing, to let the AI choose facing -- I don't do this because sometimes the regiment will wheel back and forth and never fire.

When they're not facing an enemy, but they're in range of enemy, they'll do the firing animation but you won't see any smoke. They'll also get fatigued doing this. You have to watch them and tell them to face the right way.

Thanks very much Garnier for the explanation of this apparently weird behaviour.

So, a TC'd regt (in the screenshot the 4th NC) can:

show a regt behind them as their 'Primary Target'(indicated in top left of screen AND by target symbol above the 'target' regiment)
AND
be doing the firing animation

but they're not actually firing!

I will try and swear off TCing regiments!

Cheers,

Is there any explanation for the situation in first two screenshots?
