Don't know why the firing mod doesn't work. I have been trying to figure that one out also.
Jack - I don't have the mod, but here is how you would fix the problem.

Check to see if the mod has a gfx file, and not a unitgfx file.

If this is the problem, then just copy the unit infomation from the gfx into a unitgfx .

If this is not the case, then I'm at a loss as to the problem, but this is how I updated my firing-mod files.

Hi, if its this mod http://www.norbsoftdev.net/forum/napole ... pfiremodv1 then i dont think it will work as it referes to graphics files which dont exist in the new 1.4 version.

As for squares, the behaviour is all mostly hard coded so they will break to melee 1on1 when cavalry almost touch and that cant be fixed. The squares were a new formation this version so its all very new. If they are breaking to Line to fight then that can be changed so they stay in square until the last sec, and easitly be done by using the drills file. The squares can also rotate, this is a balancing feature to avoid they getting flanked since in reality a square doesnt have a flank.

Gun,

Yes, that is the Mod and yes it won't work for the reasons you stated. Squares I've used since the new version has come out stay squares even when they melee, so no problems there.

Will,

Really? Mine tend to stick around for a couple of charges, then bug out. Are your squares properly supported?

Will,

Thus I must ask - What OOB are you using and which Cavalry is overrunning your squares?

Will,

That would be the Austrian Heavy Cavalry, Dragoons and Cuirassiers, I'll bet. These guys are incredibly tough, in the game and real life. Their mission is to sweep away enemy infantry OR force them into square, and crush enemy Cavalry. Your best defense is to have Cavalry on stand-by to counter-charge the enemy Horse. Failing that, get your guns up close and have them fire cannister into the charging Horsemen. Might not stop them, but may damage them enough that, when they close with your squares, you might be able to drive them off.
