I know this is going to sound nuts...(no man berry punching allowed please).

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

You know to even post this makes me feel like I am going to be scoffed at, ridiculed, and punched in the man berries but that has never stopped me before so here it goes...

Has anyone other than myself would like to see if a mod can be created that would simulate a turn based system?

You can move your troops at the beginning as normal, but when a certain range is reached then it switches over into turn based tactics.

I have this mod for Fallout 3 that would turn the combat system into turn based (health levels, vats etc) when you come into contact with the enemy, just wondering if something like this could ever be done?

Okay let the groin kicking, and finger pointing begin. :pinch:

It would not be possible to mod something like that with this game. Something like that would require serious coding.

And - no offense - but that isn't the game that I purchased and isn't one I'd like to play. :P

No problem, each to his own. I was talking about a modification, not turning SOW into a turned based system.

If this was doable, which it isn't (by creating a mod) no one is telling you to use it. :)

I'm curious as to why you would want it. Surely turn-based wargames for the PC went out of fashion a decade or more ago?

haaa, yeah I'm about that old as well :)

Real time is great, but for some reason or other turn based wargames in my opinion will never go out of style. I guess it has something to do with me growing up playing table top games back in the 70's, I always enjoyed them, and from time to time still do.

Personally I don't see any style of game going out of style. Like those grand old DOS games. Even though they are archaic in design, even today they still kick allot of today's games to the wayside for game play, they packed all that gaming goodness on a floppy.

I love the old style games, always have, and one more thing to why I think turn based games are the best, for every turn careful thought has to go into it before making your move which just adds to the overall flavor. One wrong use of resources could spell certain doom...

Combat Mission took a fatal turn when it went from we-go to real time, imho.

I didn't know that. That is too bad, they had such a good product. Real-Time isn't all that it is cracked up to be for some titles. :(

I think you need to be realistic and accept things as they are and as they are going now. Turn-based games are out of fashion, real time strategy is all the rage and has a far larger market share. Every developer who thinks about marketing a strategic game today will have the Total War series as his benchmark, or at the very least the customer will (which is the same thing, only more profit critical). Maybe not a very inspirational fact but a fact none-the less. Any developer to now cater for turn-based wargames today would have to not care at all about low sales or be designing a product for grognards.

The pressure is also on to deliver more and more immersive and realistic settings (terrain, textures, environments) so your other suggestion to make the figures look like animated miniatures would never be taken seriously by a developer whose business needs to sell units and make money. The concept of animated wargame miniatures style visuals is really a strange one and I doubt any company would contemplate it given that the opposite trend is now in full cry.

You may not like it but those are the simple facts.
