Map and orders

I am trying to play pc05 July 3 strike them hard, and have questions about the orders given and the game map. General Lee orders me to move south to the Hannover rd and assault the Union forces along the high ground. I have come to realize that after playing this game for a while the map is not my friend. My problems are:

The map is hard to read, I am old and do not see as well as I use to. Can it be made bigger?

There is no compass on the map telling me which is north or south. I assume the top is north and bottom south.

In this battle I am told to move south to the Hannover road, but it is not shown on the map. Most everything is south east of my starting positions.

I have the options of moving my divisions to locations on the map but cannot find them. ie Dughill, Fisler ridge, Hannover Pike, Harpst ridge ect.

My point is the map is not user friendly as it relates to orders given by General Lee. Would he have given subordinates orders to move to points on a map and they not know where these points are?

When I click on me and then the map, why can't I see where I have ordered my division commanders to move? It is a pita to have to click on individual commanders to see where they are moving on the map. Especially when the map is so vague.

I am enjoying this game but it is frustrating trying to use the map and move subordinate commands around.

Am I not understanding how to use the map and move subordinate commanders?

Hello Cpt T. One of the challenges of this scenario is that the ground is unfamiliar to your forces, even Lee. All is known is that the enemy is somewhere to the South. The best thing to do is send out recon forces to the south to find the enemies line. Spread out your divisions, send them each down a different road etc.

As far as ordering units to move to a certain place on the map, you can use the Command map. Press the N key, it brings up the command map and you can point and click anywhere on the map, and that unit will move there. If you want to move a commander and his subordinate units, you have to click a formation after you click on the command map. So lets say you want to move a whole division. Select a Division commander, Press N, click on the map where you want his division to move, the map closes, click a formation, click "use roads", and they will be on their way.

When you bring up the Command Map again, you can see where each unit has been ordered to move on the map.

Hope this helps.

Bye the way, the Hanover road is the one you (Ewell) is next to at the start of the scenario. It runs all the way down to the south edge of the map, the town of Manchester.

Any more questions just let us know.

Hello Cpt T,

In the Button Rock, which is the display box at the bottom of the screen, is the compass. It is under the time and terrain display, and as you move from side to side, you will see the direction you are facing and which direction your orders want you to go.

Thanks for the replies. I understand the lack of information that may have been available to commanders at the time and don't have a problem with it. My eye sight is not what it once was and the map is difficult to see, but I can deal with it.

I am off to whoop some Yankee butt. Thanks again.

I'm hoping this is something we can make better in the future. The smaller 2.5 x 2.5 miles maps are easier to read, but some of the 5 mile maps (like the Pipe Creek maps) can be quite difficult.

Enjoy the Yankee butt kicking.

I thought a zoom feature was eventually going to be released LP?

It's on the to-do list. :)

This should be a great time-saver, but unfortunately I cannot get it to work. When I select a commander and press N, the map doesn't come-up. Have tried as both division and corps commander. Does it depend on some setting under Options?

To get it to work for me I select the unit commander (brigade, battery, whatever) in the OOB tree screen and then hit the select this unit and goto its location button which IIRC (my game is presently not working) is the middle of the three on the lower right. This closes the oob tree screen and then I hit N and up comes the Command Map (which looks different to the normal map as it has no legend of symbols on the right side and has COMMAND MAP in big letters along the top).
