That's actually a tough one, most of the men surrounding Grant are are lower level officers. I can only recognize two generals surrounding Grant, and that's Phil Sheridan to the far left of Grant, and George Custer to the far right.

The message that Lee was willing to meet caught up with Grant while he was away from HQ, "...about four miles west of Walker's Church..." Rather than waste time, and possibly lives, returning to his HQ to change, Grant rode directly to the front. While on the road he received word of the designated meeting place. Had Grant been at his HQ when that final message arrived, I do not doubt that he would have dressed for the occasion, and of course him and his staff would have cleaned their boots.

Fascinating, thanks. I thought it was a small error of romanticism in Lee's favour by the artist.

Lee is with Col. Marshall-Lt. Col. Ely Parker is the Union American Indian- Seneca tribe- the others look familar

Isn't that General Chamberlain with his arms crossed at Grant's right?
