Winning points/Controlling an objective

Can someone please take a few minutes to explain the nuances of gaining points and controlling an objective. I'm playing Scenario 3. I have one brigade with one commander; Merideth. How do I 'control' both objectives; Hertz Woods and McPhersons Ridge?

You can't. It's a matter of choices and timing.

In that scenario, you don't. You have to pick one.
To control VPs, you must have a commander and a certain number of troops within the specified radius. You gain points, which are essential to win the scenario.
In the Meredith Scenario, I believe I stormed forward with all of my regiments at the double quick, surrounded Archer, started to gain points from the objective, capture Archer's troops (EVERY REGIMENT), then sent a few regiments over to the other VP to help out Cutler. Note that I did not move my commander or one regiment of the Herbst Wood's VP so I could continue to gain points throughout the scenario.
In most of the scenarios, if you hold the VPs from start to finish and your regiments score reasonably well, you will win a Major Victory.

This is the only scenario designed with this anomaly, for lack of a better explanation. Like HtS explained, for scenarios 1 - 20, capture the objective(s) as fast as possible and hold them til they disappear or endscenario. You must also maintain positive engagement points for a victory or major victory, the amount dependent on how fast you captured the objective(s).
After scenario 20, and with the additional Map/Battle Packs, objective treatment becomes much more varied and less predictable.

Your points are well taken, gentlemen, and appreciated.
And then the ghost of Nathan Bedford Forrest reminded me it's all about "whoever gets there the fustest with the mostest"! Won a Major Victory on #3 with 4000+ points. Ran those Rebs offa my front lawn!
I am playing 'Normal' in all Scenarios. But I'm sure I'm gonna hit a brick wall before too long!

And if you hear a "heh heh heh" in the background, know you are in trouble!

I think I'll have a few of Mr. McPherson's cows dressed up for the boys, brew up some cofee, an' have 'em rest easy; enjoy their victory while I crack a few one liners about Washington 'Society' and Mr. Lincoln's lack of multiple faces. We'll take on the devil, all in due time. No need to rush the gates of perdition, they never are shut!
