Attaching a Regiment to a different brigade:
Hey, I didn’t know this until tonight, but during a battle three of my Brigades were several miles in front of the main body, when they came upon a large enemy corps.
I placed two of the three brigades in line formation facing the enemy troops, and tried to keep the third brigade in reserve until more help arrived.
The smart choice here would have been to place the brigades farther back towards the help that was marching towards them, but I was determined to hold the cross-roads.
Well, the enemy troops did a very good job of matching my two brigades with two of their own, and also moving a brigade to the left of my battle-line.
I started moving the third brigade to the left, when I noticed that another enemy brigade was moving behind the enemy lines to deploy on my right. I then did something that I haven’t done in years, I split the third brigade into two-brigades using the detach option.
This allowed me to send three-regiments under a brigade leader to the left, and two-regiments under a brigade leader to the right to buy some time.
A lot of words here, but I’m getting to the point….. shortly.
Well, the make-shift brigade with the two regiments holding the right of the line suffered several hundred casualties, but they did slow-down the advancing enemy troops.
Now, as far as I know it is impossible to attach another regiment from a different brigade to this make-shift-brigade using the attach option.
So, I took the largest brigade that I had (i.e…General Gordon) consisting of six-regiments, and detached it into two-brigades.
Now, General Gordon is still commanding three of the six-regiments, and a no-name officer is in charge of the other three-regiments.
Now, I split the no-name-officer with three-regiments into another brigade using the detach option. This will place one-regiment under another no-name-officer.
This brigade with the one-regiment can now be assigned to the brigade that was formally on the right-of-the-line that lost several hundred men, boosting their number.
The other brigade that I split off of General Gordon’s brigade can now be re-assigned back to General Gordon using the attach option.
If, anybody else knew this, well it’s new to me!
