Heh, some interesting posts coming out now. All in all it seems like there's as much disadvantage being suggested by a unit having made the effort to provide a crude breastworks than there are advantages. Probably best to just ignore it on the basis that it balances out!

perhaps add sappers or pioneering units to be in charge of making entrenchments?
