GBB01 turned out to be underwhelming, in that I played it hands off and got almost 2000 points. I let the AI handle almost everything, and the Union cavalry simply charged the rebel infantry and routed it from the field.

Does this indicate that I should not play the game on the 'normal' setting?

GBB01 is a Bonus Scenario at the Brigade level designed to be easy.

Yes. As it says in the intro, they are entry level scenarios to get brand new players acquainted with the game. Supposed to be so easy your grandma could beat it. But they do get harder as the series progresses..
