So gettysburg had 160 yards for rifled muskets.
What are the ranges in waterloo
For muskets, rifles, canister, 6pdrs, 9pdrs and 12pdrs?
Do the 12pdrs have longer canister range then the smaller guns.
Also are large and small(long range short range canister simulated)

The max range of heavier guns is 1600 for the solid shots. Canister range is 200 for all, what change is the efficiency for bigger calibers.
the max range of muskets is 150 and 200 for rifles, the long ranges are 80 and 140. Respect Gettysburg has been evaluated than use as max range a weighted historical distance copuld have impact on the gameplay, because the target logic is triggered from the weapon max range and too short would have impacted the movements near the enemy, so has been set a distance near the historical max limit for musket engagements (given by Clausewitz between 150 and 200 yards, but longer distances also happened). The approach to the firing range and combat of infantry has been more dynamic than at Gettysburg where the troops start to fire after entering in the firing range: now the troops can go very near or remain at long distance depending from the experience, angles, ground bonus, being volley ready, so you can see exchanges at 150 yards like at 50-60 yards.

While british rearly used canister past 350 yards, the french heavy canister was used out to 600 yards.

Yes true, but 600 yards was a distance calculated during experiments on ideals grounds, because of dispersion and Magnus effect was far from the ideal shot canister at this range. In addition canister against columns or deep information was suggested only a at very short distance because solid shot and shells was considered more efficients against them and against not line formation directly frontal. During the famous artillery charge of Senarmont at Friedland, his 30 pieces shot less than 400 canisters against more than 2500 solid shots also if it reachs soon distances under the 300 yards.
In the game 200 yards distance is considered a good weighted distance to which for a piece is good switch to a canister ammunition and stop use the other ones.

I assume all these numbers can be easily modded.

Can we mod the game so the infantry AI will not fire unless the enemy is within 100 yds? I don't care what the maximum range of the musket is set to as long as the infantry never fires at that range.

Yes, is something you can manage with the AI code

That's good. If the game uses the maximum weapon range as the reaction range, I can set it to a large number. The infantry will not use it for anything else. I can use the long range number for the engagement range.

In this case is better you work on the "no target" routines and check the enemies around at place of targets, which is not limited from a range. Extend the target range will triggered a lot of different routines which make no sense for manage long distance decisions without fight. But because find enemy can be heavy if done every loop for every unit, is better always use it under some pre-condition.
