Road Movement

I was curious to see how much quicker road movement was vs overland movement.
I selected a regiment and had it move, in column formation, about a 1/3 of the way across the map. There were not any water obstacles but there were woods, plowed fields etc. Basically from point A to point B without specifying that the regiment move along the roads. I then moved a regiment from point A to point B, in column formation, and selected that the regiment use the road. For the most part the road was almost a straight line between point A and point B. I could not see any noticeable advantage in speed using the road. Is this intended or am I doing something incorrect?
I used the same example from about but I used artillery instead and got the same result.
Overall, I have been having fun playing around and learning the system. I was a bit frustrated with the stock toolbar then I saw a reference to the grog toolbar and it made a world of difference for me.
A few wish list items: a mini-map feature that has the ability to stay up as you play the game Just something small to help with orientation. Perhaps there is one and I have not found it or clicked a box in the options menu. Also, on the static maps (I am playing in normal non-campaign mode) using the hot key to open "M" is what I have been using, but hitting "M" again does not close the map, I need to manually use the mouse and hit the X in the top right-hand side. An end of battle report. I believe that someone else/others have made reference to this as well.
Keep up the great work!
Regards
