GCM Map Refresh

Most GCM players are aware by now that the function that generates new random maps is broken and that we've been playing with the latest 25 maps (1385-1409) for a few months now. While brand new maps are no longer possible, I have been experimenting with recycling some of our old random maps. In Launcher ver. 925 we now can also play the 5 random maps that were part of the last new maps group before the current set i.e., maps 1380-1384. Hosts will find these toward the bottom of the 1385-1408 set. This sampling was limited to 5 retreads since I wasn't sure it would work and was wary of breaking the whole thing. If this catches on, future releases could add more maps or change out maps as we wish.

A couple of considerations:

1) For this to work, the recycled maps must still reside in each player's "GCM Random Maps 4" mod, to avoid the "level not found" error. I suspect most players don't purge their old maps, so we should be safe playing with recent old maps, except perhaps for very new players;

2) Personally, my list of archival random maps goes back 75 to random map 1335. (I did a purge of early maps about a year ago). If someone has maps going way back, it would probably be a good idea to build a "master" Random Maps 4 mod for others to draw on. If such a file were available for easy download, our list of potential archival maps to play would become nearly endless;

3) Something we might want to consider is to create a list of all-time favorite random maps as we play them. Over time, we could have a list of, say, 50 or more favorites available to hosts for play anytime.

Appreciate everyone's feedback on these things.

I've never deleted anything, though I had to reinstall once when my anti-virus kicked in. I shoulda have a bunch of maps, I'll look when I get home.

Thanks. This morning I stumbled upon an old, semi-complete version of GCM Random Maps 4 in a backup on my W10 HDD, so I do have several hundred of our old maps to draw from after all. A group of 25 Large Random Maps sucks up nearly 600 megs of storage on a HD.

As we play through these vintage maps I hope to solicit feedback from players immediately after battles. Maps that stand out as especially enjoyable (even by members of the losing team) will be noted as candidates for a future "Best of GCM Random Maps" version of the Random Maps 4 mod. As we do this, it would also be easy to assign them categories to suit particular host & player preferences e.g., highly wooded, prominent hills, rolling terrain, mostly open, converging streams, interesting road network, etc.

Well like a nucklehead that I am, I managed to lose most of the GCM maps. So if any one wants to post up a mod that includes the GCM maps, I for one will be delighted.
