So I've been thinking and searching for the answer to the subject line but haven't been able to find a definite answer.

What exactly was a Corps commanders duties during the ACW, like what did they actually do?
I know that they where in command of the divisions and probably acted as an army commander when acting as a lone corp.
But what did they do when the army commander was present, like at Gettysburg for example?
How much micromanaging did they do of the brigades and what other duties did they have? Logistics/administrative/staff etc.

I can guess but I'm not sure.

Anyone can shed some light on this or point me to where I can read more about it?
